Hello Malcolm .
Merry Christmas from 'down under', (New Zealand to be exact.) My name is Laurel Southern, but my maiden name was Laurel Monteith. I was born on 27th February, 1940, to Lawrence Charles Monteith and Bernadine Mary Scanlon. My grandfather, Alexander Lamont Monteith was Labour Member of Parliament for 'Miramar Central' for many years so we were brought up very interested in politics. I now live in Paraparaumu (one hour's drive north of the capital, Wellington) and have recently aquired my own computer (my husband, Keith Southern was always too busy with his music on our other one, so I demanded one of my own, and what do you know! I got it! Hence I can now browse the web at my leisure, and I was very excited to find your web page.

My mother and father are now both deceased, my father died at 50, my mum at 88, just 3 years ago. She was never one to relate any history of the family to us, and I always thought it a great shame. However, as Scott Menteith's email mentions, it seems our name has changed through history, being Menteith, Mantooth etc, and I would love to know more about it. Anyone can email me on kspmusic@xtra.co.nz, it would be great just to have a chat. My knowledge of our history is abysmal (spelling too, I think).

I look forward to hearing from you, or any other Monteiths who would like to drop me a line.

Once again to all Monteiths, Merry Christmas from warm 'down under' where, even though it is our summer, we still have turkey and Christmas pudding! God bless.

Laurel.

Dear Mr. M. L. Monteith:

I noted your web site and the coat of arms at the beginning, though too small to see clearly, appears to be that of an ancestor of mine, and I am wondering if we might have the same roots.  The Menteith I'm referring to is James Menteith of Auldcathie, who married Magdalen Dalyell in 1688.  They had nine children, six boys and three girls.  If this is your family, too, I would like to hear from you.

Hi!  As my sister and I were looking up Scotland Tourism, we came across a Lake of Montieth (notice the different spelling).  We then discovered this site!!!  We are from Winnipeg, Manitoba, in third generation Canadian Monteith's.  Our Grandfather, George Monteith, is the farthest back name that we know.  We are also from Celtic descent.  We would be interested in receiving any information available concerning our heritage; and although we are not currently hooked up to email, we will be visiting your site periodically.

Thank You

Dear Malcolm,
I was extremely excited to find your site. You are absolutely right when you mention our fixation with our family history. My name is Holly Monteith; third child to a family of six children. Our branch will be a complex one as my mother Margaret Palmer married two Monteith Brothers, firstly Hazen having three of the children and then his older brother William having three more children. We were born in the 50,s through the 70's in a place near Fredericton NB. Our house was filled with fiddles banjos and guitars. Big fans of bluegrass and celtic music.  Never a dull moment. Lots of stories were shared.

My Grandfather James Monteith came from Northern Ireland also ( from the Belfast area) in the late 1800's or early 1900's. I believe he was married twice. I have heard my father make mention of many family members but never met them.

I have many a story to tell but will write more when I have time. It is late and I want to explore your site. It is really wonderful. I am a registered nurse working in an ER  in the Miami FL area. My Husband is from the Guelph area.  We will be moving back home soon, hoping to settle in the Guelph area. I may get a chance to meet with you in person. We sould be arriving in a few months.

Thank-you for starting such a great site. It really brought tears to my eyes like I had found a lost peoples. The ones my father talked so much about.

Sincerely, Holly Tupy (Monteith)

I am also hoping to potentially visit the location in November and any and all suggestions would be welcome.

FYI, My name is Michael Stuart Monteith and I live in Atherton California. My father's name was Peter Stuart Monteith and his father was Donald W. Monteith -- all also of Northern California.  I am copying this to my cousin Anne Barfuss Conley, whose mother's maiden name was Jane Monteith and resides in St. Paul, MN.

Any contact or suggestions you might be able to provide us would be

I just stumbled across your web site when I did a search of Fitzsimmons and Thorndale. I am just starting my research of the Heatley Fitzsimmons family in Thorndale and I was very excited as the first page I went to
was one with maps (that I couldn't access) and a note at the bottom giving directions to the Fitzsimmons homestead. Unfortunately I cannot seem to use your search facility on the site to see how the Fitzsimmons
and Monteith family are connected. I'm wondering if some of my settings might be incorrect or is there a problem at your end.

Looks like you have a great site here and am hoping I will find some

My name is Wendy Mackie and I run a small research business which is aimed at Ex Pats who moved abroad and will never return but still remember Scotland and where they were born and brought up.

I specialises in researching - where you used to live in Scotland i.e. the town where you were born, the street where you used to live, the school where you attended and the church you were christened, married. These are only a few examples of the type of information that you would received in the form of a personal portfolio.  Each portfolio is made up to your own specifications - current photographs of you home town - all which relate to your childhood memories of Scotland.   Leaflets and brochure of that area and all information gathered will also be included.

My website is called www.scottishchildhood.co.uk and gives all the information required if you wish to commission work - prices are competitive and good value.  Memorabilia from your childhood are still available in a modern form today - these can also be purchased.

I hope this site is of interest. I would any appreciate if you could link my site to yours and could supply details of any Scottish Society websites and email contacts within your area that you thinks might be interested.  I am also interested in contacting any Scottish magazines which I might be able to contact.

Thank you for your help with this and wishing you all the best from bonny Scotland.

Bye the wayl, my husband and I went to the Bridge of Allen Highland Games Nr Stirling last Sunday. The games were really enjoyable and with all the usual events.  Hope your games were equally good.

Dear Malcolm,

Sorry to have stolen your email address. I have had it for about a year now so you aint getting it! Only joking.  Its nice to hear from you, and I agree a bit of a coincidence. But what is more of a coincidence is that I am actually from Castlederg, Co. Tyrone, Northern Ireland.  I now live in Lurgan, Co. Armagh, I have been living here for the last 6 months.  I moved because I got a job as a software engineer in Lisburn, with a company called Leading Edge Research Ltd.

My family and I have lived in Castlederg all our lives. I am 23, single and have no children!!  My father was Desmond Monteith. Mother Pearl (Taylor) now Monteith - obviously. I have 2 sisters and 1 brother.

There were 4 boys in my fathers family - David, Samuel, William (Billy) and Desmond.

David and Billy are the only remaining brothers.  Billy now lives with his family in New Zealand.  David still lives near Castlederg.

Sorry to be so brief but I am in work so I better go do some.  If there is any thing you would like to ask me please feel free.  I'll write again and tell you a little more about myself and my family whenever I have time.

God Bless,

Mal.

Mr. Malcolm Monteith,

As I noticed on your website you have been busy recently.  I believe I wrote some time ago, my email records are a bit of a mess, but Mrs. Mary Whipple suggested I contact you again regarding my interest in the Monteith/Nelson marriages.

I know that Annie Jane Neilson, wife of Samuel Monteith, was the daughter of Matthew Neilson and Frances Woods, but am trying to find some proof that Fanny Neilson, wife of James Monteith, was also a daughter of Matthew and Frances.  (Note: the spellings Nelson and Neilson seem to be used equally in all the documents I have found on the family.  I use Neilson because it is the name on the tombstone in Avondale Cemetery, Stratford)

Would you know, or could you suggest someone else who might, of any information which might be able to shed some light on Fanny Nelson's parents?

Thanks for any help,
Ken Dworschak
Ottawa

p.s. In case you were interested in more information on the Nelson/Neilson family this is a summary I sent to Mary.
========================================================================
Just thought to send on a brief overview of the Neilson family of Downie Township, Perth Co., Ontario.  At least 'my' version, which may or may not be very accurate.

Matthew Neilson was born about 1788 in Ireland.  He married Frances Woods, born about 1796 in Ireland, and had seven children.  Sometime between 1835 and 1840 the familiy came across the ocean and settled in Downie Township, except for Frances.  She died on May 24, 1835.  There were three sons:

Matthew(1823-1882), John(1824-1852) and Henry(1827-1852).

Matthew Sr. died on Dec 31, 1858.  All the above dates are from the family tombstone in Avondale Cemetery, Stratford, Ontario. It should be noted that Matthew died in London, England.

Also buried in the family plot is Martha Neilson(1828-1905), the youngest daughter, her daughter Frances Catherine Jane Pinch, her son-in-law John Alexander Bothwell and a granddaughter, Muriel Alexandra Bothwell.  John A. Bothwell and F. C. J. "Fanny" Pinch being my great-grandparents.

The eldest daughter was Catherine Neilson(1819-1860), married James Powell. Their marriage record from 1850 in Stratford indicates that she was the daughter of Matthew and Frances.  After her death her husband remarried and then the whole family appears to have left the Stratford area for places unknown.

Annie Jane Neilson(1826-1858) married Samuel Monteith.  Her connection to Matthew and Frances would appear to be supported by the marriage announcement of  my great-grandmother Fanny.  In the announcement it mentions that the Hon. Nelson Monteith, first cousin, of Fanny gave her away in marriage.  Also, when Annie Jane died her obituary mentioned Mrs. Martha Pinch as her sister.

Finally  there is Fanny Neilson(1823-1855), wife of James Monteith, your husband's ancestors.  Her connection to Matthew and Frances Neilson is more tenuous.  First, there does not appear to have been another Neilson/Nelson family in the Downie/Stratford area at the time.  Second, the given names are highly suggestive of a connection.  Matthew's wife's name was Frances, and the common nickname for Frances was Fanny.  It was common for parents to name children after their parents or themselves.  Amongst the other six
children of Matthew and Frances there was a Matthew, so there was probably a Fanny.  Also, James Monteith and Fanny Neilson named their first two children Elizabeth and John after James' parents, the next two children were named Matthew and Fanny.  This suggests that Fanny's parents were named Matthew and Frances.  I realize this is all speculative but that is something I hope one of their descendants can shed light on.

Finally, there is the whole question of Nelson or Neilson as the spelling. It is Neilson on the tombstone, in the census it is spelled as either Nelson or Neilson.  Some other documents also use either spelling equally.  I
prefer Neilson as it was the spelling on the tombstone, but perhaps the other spelling would be preferred by others.

My name is Rich Monteith and I live in Post Falls, ID.  I was born and raised in Cataldo, Id...roughly 30 miles E. of Coeur d'Alene.  Much of my family has been in this area for many years.  My grandfather, Harrison Monteith, was born and raised in Devil's Lake, North Dakota.  I've been told that there were two original clans of Monteith's that migrated from Scotland to North Dakota.  One settled in that area and the other went to Oregon.  I've also been told that there is a Monteith museum somewhere in Oregon.  I've never been able to track down the location.  I noticed on your e-mail contact list that there is a Jim Monteith in Spokane, WA, which is where I work.  I don't believe he's any relation to our family.  I'd like to be added to your list and see if someone out there has any contacts to our side of the family.  Thanks for your work on the website.  It's very interesting to see all the Monteith connections from around the world.

I believe that there is a missing child in the family tree for JOHN MONTEITH (1769 - Jan. 31, 1860) and ELIZABETH GIBSON (1781 - Aug 19, 1844)

I have a Mary Monteith, sometimes referred to as Elizabeth Monteith that married Cornelius Dingman in 1835 in Ancaster. They had property in the Gore of Downie, Perth County, Ontario and I have a copy of the deed when the property was sold to Andrew Monteith for 5 shillings. Along with this, they had children living with James and Fanny Monteith in the 1851 Census. The children they have were Eliza Jane (c1836), Catherine (c1839), Mary Ann (1840) and John Cornelius(1842). Mary Monteith was born around 1814 in Ireland and died before 1851 because Cornelius had remarried.

I don't know who is working on this tree but if you want to pass this information along, they may contact me for further information I have.

Dear Malcolm:

Since moving to California a year ago last October I haven't seen any activity on the Monteith Home Page. There is nothing showing for the year 2000.  Are you not continuing with this great effort?  If so I, for one, will be saddened and disappointed for I thought you were filling a huge void.  I connected with three lost branches of my line through your efforts in setting up this very good and valuable mean of communicating with "lost family" members and I would hate to see it discontinued.  At the same time I realize that keeping this going is a great effort on  your part and I believe every person using it would agree with that.  Also, if there is a financial problem let us know so we can do something about it.  I certainly am very gratefull for that which you created.  It has certainly been very valuable to me.  Hope to see you again at some future Monteith reunion, but the health of my wife has made that a very remote possibility I am sorry to say.

Hello, my name is Deirdre Bray and I am a Monteith descendant(my mother's maiden was Monteith). I have been able to locate my GGgrandfather David Monteith and his wife Anne (could possibly been a second wife). They had 12 children: Mary Jane, James, John, David, Robert, Alice, William, Samual(my Ggrandfather), Charles, Rachael, Margaret, and Edward.David Sr. lived in Mountain Township, Dundas county of Ontario(1871-census). David was born in Ireland. If anyone has any information, I would really appreciate it. Also, in my research, it seems a lot of the Monteith's were from Scotland. How did the Monteith's come to live in Ireland and were they originally from Scotland? Thanks for any information and thanks for the website-it's great!

My grandmother was born Margaret Monteith on 06 March,1870.

Her father was Frederick Monteith and was living in Waukesha, Wisconsin.

It is my understanding we are related to the Monteith family who were living in Broadalbin, New York  from at least 1813 until at least 1850.

Does this ring any bells?

Hello Malcolm,

As I'm sure you've already guessed from my email address, I'm a fellow Monteith.  Its odd, a friend and
I were talking about names and their origins over lunch, and when I returned to my desk she had done a
search for my surname and discovered your website.

Would you be interested in our family history to add to your website?  We have a cousin in South Africa who
has researched some of the family tree, we can trace the name back to the 1840's when my Dad's ancestor
came to Scotland from Ireland.  If you're interested in adding this to your site, I can certainly send the
information on to you...

We are: Robert Hamilton Monteith (my Dad), DOB10/10/1943, Joan McLeod Monteith (my Mum, nee
Urquhart) DOB 3/4/1944, Alan Joseph Monteith (my brother) DOB 27/5/1968 and myself Laura Christine
Monteith DOB 7/11/1972.

Unfortunately the family tree hasn't yet been presented in a nice geneological software format, it is something I've been meaning to do for a while... At the moment its just on paper, my second-cousin Brian Monteith from South Africa sent it to my Dad in a letter and I remember drawing it up on several pieces of paper taped together so we had an actual family tree!!  But that was a good 5 years ago or so... so maybe now this is the impetus for me to actually acquire some good geneological software and put it all together!

Hope to hear from you soon,

Kind Regards,

Laura C Monteith

Hi,

My name is Dan Borgen, and am just starting to research the Monteith family. My Grandfather was Harold Monteith (born Fredrick Harold Monteith).  His father was George Elie Monteith.  He was a brother to James Garner Monteith.

As I said I am just starting so I don't have the dates of birth or documentation, but from talking to my mother (Patricia Elizabeth Borgen (Montieth)), Goerge had seven children:

1 Floyd
2 Viola (Babe)
3 Roland (RE)
4 Fredrick (Harold)
5 William
6 and 7 (twins) Hazel and Harrison  (Toots and Dope)

The only discrepancy with what my mom told me and the web page is my mom said that her grandfather (George) had three brothers they were James, Robert and William.  But I see by looking here they where James, Robert and
Harrison.

Thank you for your time

Hi Malcolm,

You have done a wonderful job on the Monteith site!  I continually tell people about it, and recommend that other relatives check it out.
I am Gayle Monteith's daughter, Karen (McCaul) Grant.  I noticed that there are a couple of tiny errors in our family information, and I thought that you would appreciate an update...

James Kirkman McCaul - husband to Gayle Edith Elisabeth, was born Nov. 04, 1943.

Raymond James Moffett - husband to Susan Edith Elizabeth, was born May 15, 1961.

Morgan Crystal Mary Gayle Robinson - daughter of Wayne Edward Keith Robinson
and Stacey Boukhout.  Wayne and Debbie Mitchell are divorced.

Karen Evelyn Jean Grant - married Adam Ryan Seccombe Grant, born Jan. 15, 1973.  We are expecting a baby any day, and we will send another update with that information as soon as we have it!

Thanks so much for all the work you've put into this wonderful website - it generates much family pride for all the Monteith's.

Sincerely,

Karen Grant

I note that you have as one of your links the Penman-Monteith equation. Do you know how the equation derived its name?  I'm particularly interested not so much for academic reasons but Monteith has been a family name for generations e.g. my name being Anthony Monteith Penman, my father Campbell Monteith Penman and so on. Perhaps this is purely coincidental.

Dear Malcolm,

I tried to send this to Reverend George Calvary Hospital but it was denied.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dear Reverend George,

What religion are you?  I am Catholic.

My very frail uncle showed me my paternal grandparents' marriage
                           certificate the other day.

My great grandmother's  name was Margaret Miller nee Monteith.  Her son
William Miller married my grandmother in  Thomas Miller's house in
Balclutha, South Otago New Zealand. The marriage took place in September
1902.  Great Grandfather  Thomas Miller was a gold dredger and my
grandfather's birthplace was said to be Melbourne but Uncle Doug
insisted that it was Tasmania.  The fact that Thomas Miller and Margaret
Miller (nee Monteith) had been in Melbourne makes me wonder whether
great grandfather had prospected there for gold in the 1850's.  A friend
advised me that my great grandfather would have needed capital to buy a
dredge.  Do you have any knowledge of Monteiths in Melbourne in the gold
rush of the 1850's?  Or emigrating to Otago New Zealand for gold?  (It
                           was discovered down here 1861)

My grandfather said he was 32 when he married but Uncle Doug said he lied as my grandmother was 22.

I am a researcher whose first book was about a Baptist man (and founder of the
group of Baptist churches in Otago).  My subject William Ings came out
here after ten years in Victoria 1862 and went to Gabriel's Gully to
prospect for gold without much luck.

I research bigger stuff in New Zealand now but I am prepared to do my
bit to trace Monteiths in New Zealand.

I am wanting to relocate myselfto Melbourne in  2002 a double reason for my interest.  I                            have seen Malcolm's page when I searched for Monteith and am interested in the
Celts my maternal grandmother was Irish.  However, Uncle Doug said
English, My former said France, Someone said there is a Monteith clan in
Scotland.  My word, the origins are vast!

                           sincerely Natalie Fraser
