Dear Malcolm:
Greetings! I have additional
information to add to the New Brunswick Monteiths. How do I submit updates?
Do I send you an E-mail with the attached document? Please advise.
Thank-you.
PS. The information I have involves the 3rd generation son by the name of
Archibald. He is my GGGrandfather. He had 3 sons and a daughter.
I found the extended family long after the Brayall book (by Linda Fairley) was
published. Seems the information as published on this site comes directly
from this book.

Malcolm,
Whilst surfing the net I inputted my name into a search engine and surprisingly found your web page. As you can see my name is Colin Monteith and I am from Belfast in Northern Ireland. The family moved to the North West of England in the early eighties,I have 1 sister and 2 brothers and My parents also live locally. My father's name is Norman Monteith and grandfather William (who died in the early eighties) But as my dad was an only child he is or so we thought the last of his line. I would be interested if you or your readers would like me to find out more about about him or his parents history. As this would enable me to find out more about my own past.
Thanks for your time
Colin

Good Morning Allan,
May I introduce myself? I am Kathleen Cartwright Murray, a
great-granddaughter of Margaret Monteith Kay, through her daughter Euphemia.
(This is the Margaret who is person #3 on the Huron County page of the
Monteith website).
I was directed to you by Inez Tarbet. Inez and I "met" when our
research intersected (Dr. John Kay and Catherine Miller -- parents-in-law of
Margaret Monteith Kay). My notes tell me that I had logged the existence
of the Monteith site but had not spent much time there ... perhaps due to the
lack of new information regarding my branch of research. Mostly, however,
I have devoted my energies to those branches of my family less well researched
already. I am fortunate enough to have a copy of "Monteiths and
Monteith Descendants (revised)" by J. Ernest Monteith which has served
nicely as a roadmap for my research. If you are the Allan Monteith to whom
"Cousin Ernie" dedicated his efforts, I am carrying coals to Newcastle
by offering to share, but I do make the offer.
I would like to share some additional/corrective information for the website
regarding Margaret Monteith and her family. How would I go about doing
that?
Thanks for your time,
Kathleen

Found your website while searching for info on John Monteith. I am a
postal history collector.
I have a postal card written to Hon. John Monteith, Supt. Public Schools,
Jefferson City, MO sent by A.H. Edwards from St. Charles County, Missouri (State
Representative for St. Charles County, MO). The postal card was the type
sold in 1873 and 1874. Do you know if this John Monteith is in family

Would appreciate hearing from you.
Thank you.

I am based in Surrey England so I don't think there are any Monteiths down here except for my son Graham and daughter Shannon. We are descended from Thomas Campbell Monteith who married three times Rebecca Ross; Mary Jane Higginson (our lot), and Mary Jane Ross. Mary Jane Higginson had Marcus Higginson, Henry Edward and Alexander Shannon. My dad was Henry Edward, son of Alexander Shannon and Elizabeth Bankhead (hence my Bankhead middle names and my daughter's Shannon Elizabeth!
Thomas Campbell was born 1832 and died 1902 was from William Monteith and Sarah Campbell (married in1830

Hello Malcolm,
Welcome to oz, sydney, and in paricular kirribilli!
Thanks for your response and the information. sydney george (natural) is just
one of 3 stepchildren and 13 naturals. scott etc. are a couple of syds children.
Of the 16 only 3 are still alive. david, my father. myrtle, and trixie. i'll
send you details of the subsequent issue over the next week or so. be warned,
there's stacks. Every Menteith in australia is a direct decendant of ian
and annie saffron.
my main are of enquiry is who was ian edin menteith. it seems he was not who he
claimed. the attached is a summary of my investigations to date. 'diary entries'
of date etc. are not my main interest. i want some meat on the bones.
there is no apparent connection between 'menteith' and 'monteith' in australia.
connections from the past are extremely difficult to link without specific
birth, death and marriage details. as we know, the name has many
variations. however the claim to the name comes from about 3 or 4 main
disparate factors.
1. decendants from the earls of menteith. family names most common - graham or
gilchrist. the earldom ceased in 1694.
2. decendants the earls of arran and knopdale. family name menteith, sir john
menetet being the first earl. this peerage ceased in 1747.
3. from an era when surnames were uncommon, a name was usually trade or
geographically related. men/mon/teith. worked for, lived in, belonged to the
clan etc.
anyhowever, enough 'background'.
oral 'history' does seem to show a strong connection between ian and south
africa. if you have any e.mail contacts, i'd appreciate them. particularly in
the durban area. as you'll see from the attached, there's a sa
connection. most of the action in the zulu and boer wars occured in kwa zulu/natal
province.

Hello Laura,
I came across your message to Malcolm Monteith while browsing the Monteith
Website, and was most interested to hear that you have a cousin with the same
name as me in South Africa who has been doing some family tree
research. What particularly interested me is that although I've been living in
Dunedin, New Zealand for some years, I was born and grew up in Pretoria, South
Africa! I'd always intended to research the South African branch of the
family but never got around to it. My own father's name was William Robert
Monteith, born in Bloemfontein in 1902 (same place as Tolkien!) and his father's
name was James Monteith, born in Tarkastad in the Eastern Cape Province.
Further back than that is mystery - indeed, I'm totally ignorant as to when the
Monteiths originally arrived in South Africa. I'd certainly be most interested
in pursuing this and would be delighted to make contact with your cousin - or
indeed to learn more of the family details which he sent to your dad.
For the record, I have 3 sons: Hugh John Duncan Monteith, born 18 June 1967 (a
writer, currently living in Cape Town), Christopher William Monteith, born 15
March 1983 (studying Maths and Computer Science at the University of Otago) and
Malcolm James Monteith, born 5 September 1984 (currently in his final year of
high school here in Dunedin). I'm married to Vivienne Joyce Monteith (born
Norman); my full name is Brian Duncan Monteith and I'm a professor at the dental
school at the University of Otago.
I see that in a week from now, you're having one of those milestone birthdays!
Many happy returns and have a good time! I hope to hear from you soon.
Regards,
Brian Monteith

Hello from down under,
My name is Warren Menteith, a grandson of Ian Edin (Hoyland) Menteith. On his
wedding certificate (1900) and his ww1 military records he gives his birth as
1862 in Perth, Scotland. His parents are given as Edin Ian Menteith
and Sarah Woodreeves.
Exhaustive searches cannot substantiate this, nor can any of his 'history' prior
to 1900. it is thought he arrived in Australia between 1890 and 1900.
He was known as 'Jack' or possibly 'Johnny'. There is also the possibility
that Menteith was an assumed name, and that Hoyland was the real one.
As far as I am aware, all Menteiths in Australia are descendants of Ian.
If anyone wants post 1900 details please contact me.
Similarly, if anyone outside the family has info on Woodreeves or Hoyland
linking with Menteith, I would love to hear.

Hi,
My name is Gillian Lyness - but my mother's maiden name is Monteith. Great
site.
She is Blanche Monteith married to Norman Scott, daughter of Samuel Monteith
& Jean Galbraith - married in 1925 and both died in the 60's.
Samuel's children are Blanche, Samuel, Howard, Pearl and Dorothy. All Live
in NI except Dorothy who emigrated to London, Ontario in the 70's and still
lives in that area of Canada. All are still alive with children and
grandchildren.
I have tried to see Samuel's [born 1894] relations on the Monteith site - namely
his brothers & sisters - Robert, William, Tom, Maggie, Alexander, Archie,
Charlie and Albert. Perhaps you can advise.
I understand that the Monteith family in Canada - Nelson and Norville put
together a Monteith Family Book which traces the generations back to Robert
Monteith in 1775.
Would appreciate any comments.

My name is Gregory Sean Monteith, son of Joseph William Monteith Jr, and Joyce
Ellen Houser. My father grew up in Zanesville, Ohio, USA. Dad also
has four sons from a previous marriage that still live back there (Joe, John,
Mike, & Bruce Monteith). I currently reside in Southern California
with my wife Denise, son Blake, and daughter Alexandra. I will try to find
out more about my father's line, I only know that there is a somewhat extended
"clan" of Monteiths in the eastern US. Growing up on the west
coast, though, I have had very little contact with any of
them.
Thank you for the hard work at helping keep our history alive. Please feel

I thank you for what you have presented on the Website.
I was actually looking up some info, by chance, to avoid having to drive to my
parent's and look it up in their book.
I have a new generation that you can add to the tree, if you would like.
I am David John Monteith, son of David Charles Monteith, grandson of George Glen
Monteith, great-grandson of Samuel James Monteith etc., etc.
I married Jan Nicole Wakely (b. 29 Apr 67)
We have 3 children; Megan Nicole Monteith (b. 28 Mar 95)
Adam David Monteith (b. 10 Oct 96)
Nicholas Neill Monteith (b. 11 Mar 98)
I hope this helps 'fill out' our tree.
Thanks,
Dave Monteith

Thanks.
P.S. Hazel's name in the book is Schiller, she was also married to James Keehl and
now to Hubert Dawdy, she was born out of wedlock so she carried the
Monteith name.

In doing a "Monteith" search, I came across your website and am
delighted to know that it exists. Though my husband and I do not have a
personal website, we are planning to do one in the near future and will
keep you apprised of our progress.
I would like to offer the following information now however.
My husband, Harry L. Monteith, is a professional magician who performs under the
name of Harry Monti. We can be reached at our home email:
MontiMagic@aol.com.
For about six years we have been actively involved with a magic troupe that is
comprised of mentally challenged individuals. In 1999-2000, Harry was the
National President of the Society of American Magicians and during this term as
President, we were instrumental in the Society passing a resolution supporting a
program to teach magic in the school systems to special ed students. We
have now developed a program which is in its infancy - in one classroom
currently. To find out more about our program, you may visit the SAM
website at http://specedmagic.tripod.com
As you will note from this website, where magic is concerned, Harry is known as
Harry Monti. He is also a member of the International Brotherhood of
Magicians and the Magic Circle in London (which elected
him to become a Member of the Inner Magic Circle of which there are never more
than 200 members world wide.)
Best wishes for continued good luck with your Monteith pursuits. As I
obtain more definite information on this branch of the family, I will forward it
to you.

on 12/17/1896. Harriett Emma Wagner was born 2/25/1874 in New Washington
(I don't know what state). and she died 9/2/1927 in Mansfield.

Subject: Another branch?
Date: Mon, 8 Apr 2002 22:38:47 +0930
We are an Australian branch of the Monteith Family. The records we have date
back to Alexander Monteith born in County of Stirling, Scotland 27/10/1810. He
married Ann Stevens 29/01/1823 of Camberwell England in Australia on Sept 23
1839. They had 3 children William (08/09/1840), Emelia Caroline (24/04/1842)
& Walter Alexander (1/06/1848).
My Husband, Lindsay's, family is descended from Walter Alexander. He
married Emily Rowland in 1877 and they had 5 children: Walter Ernest, Annie
Sophie, Sydney Rowland, Elsie May and Emily Maude.
Sydney Rowland married Jane Coulson in Queensland in 1907. They had 6 children: Harold Victor, Jean Gertrude, Vera, Eric (Jock), Ivan Frank and Allen Edmond.
Jock married Margaret MacLean and they also had 6 children: Barbara, Alison, Geoffrey Blyth, Peter Rowland, Elaine Janet and Lindsay Douglas.
We have 3 children : Clare, Anna and Alan.
Looking over your homepage and links, it is interesting to see how the same family names have cropped up over the years and over the continents. At present our son, Alan is doing a Student Exchange in Ashcroft, BC. He was surprised to find so many Monteiths and has sent us the homepage address.
If you would like other information please respond and we will send what we have. It will be interesting to see how we fit into the overall plan.
William Monteith moved to New Zealand where his line continues I believe.
Regards
Armida Monteith

My great-great grandfather was John Monteith, b. circa 1833-1836 in the
province of Quebec. He married
Catherine Dunsmore (Densmore) on 14 December 1855 at St. James Anglican Church
in Stratford, Ontario. (His
parents were William Monteith and Eliza.) His first 4 children were
baptized at the same church. According to
the 1871 census, they resided in N. Perth County and were of Irish descent.
Do you have any idea if they are somehow related to your branch of the Monteiths? I can't seem to make the
connection. I would appreciate any information on this family. Thank you.

Malcolm,
I'm surprised you don't have any information on the Henry Monteith Family of the
St John Valley. Here is a partial register report showing some of the
information. Henry came to Canada in the 1860's, a bit later than those shown on
your website. Could he be from the same root family?
I would appreciate it if you could look at this information and provide some
feedback.
Sincerely,
John Jameson
