Dear Malcolm:

Greetings!  I have additional information to add to the New Brunswick Monteiths. How do I submit updates?  Do I send you an E-mail with the attached document?  Please advise.  Thank-you.

PS.  The information I have involves the 3rd generation son by the name of Archibald.  He is my GGGrandfather.  He had 3 sons and a daughter.  I found the extended family long after the Brayall book (by Linda Fairley) was published.  Seems the information as published on this site comes directly from this book.

Whilst surfing the net I inputted my name into a search engine and surprisingly found your web page. As you can see my name is Colin Monteith and I am from Belfast in Northern Ireland. The family moved to the North West of England  in the early eighties,I have 1 sister and 2 brothers and My parents also live locally. My father's name is Norman Monteith and grandfather William (who died in the early eighties) But as my dad was an only child he is or so we thought the last of his line. I would be interested if you or your readers would like me to find out more about about him or his parents history. As this would enable me to find out more about my own past.

Thanks for your time

Do you know if the Northern Ireland branch of the Monteith family can be traced to Thomas Monteith of Glasgow Scotland? I have recently discovered that he is my 7th great-grandfather and am trying to trace the family even further. I do have the family tree back to him if that would be useful to you. Thank you.

I am trying to research my family history and am having some difficulty. When I found that there was a web site dedicated to the decendents of the family name Monteith I was extremely pleased.
All I know of my background is that My father James was born in Liverpool in 1923. His father was called Alexander and he came from Stirling. Sadly that is all the information that I have. I do not even know my Fathers Mothers name.
I am limited for time and therefore trips to record offices and the like are not a regular option. All of my Fathers Brothers and Sisters are deceased and I did not find out anything about his past whilst he was alive. How I wish I could turn back the clock and ask him!
I would be grateful if you could let me know the best way of researching my Surname.
Thank you in advance for any help you may be able to give.

Thanks so much for the information this morning.  Here, before I forget to do it, is a brief update on Margaret Monteith, whose website information is incomplete (and the given name of her husband is not correct as listed).
Everything I have listed here is documented.
Re: Margaret Monteith, daughter of George Monteith and Euphemia Alexander

Margaret Monteith - born May 15 1839, Dalhousie Twp., Lanark County, CW; died September 16, 1910, Lapeer, Lapeer County, Michigan; buried Mt Hope Cemetery, Lapeer, Michigan.

She married John Paterson Kay, on August 13, 1860 in Mitchell, Perth County, Ontario.

John Paterson Kay was born in 1839 in Kilbarchan, Scotland; died June 29, 1883 (probably in Belmore, Bruce County, Ontario); buried in McIntosh United Church Cemetery, Carrick Township, Bruce County, Ontario.  John P. Kay was a physician and served the US Union Army as a contract surgeon at Point of Rocks (Virginia) military hospital in the spring of 1865.

Their children were:

John S. Kay born December 11 1859 (per tombstone math) and died November 1, 1866.  He is buried in McIntosh Cemetery.

George Alexander Kay born August 1863, died October 2 1933.  A pharmacist in Baltimore Maryland.

Thomas W. Kay born July 26 1864 (per tombstone math) died May 17 1871.  Buried in McIntosh Cemetery.

William John Kay, born April 5 1867, in Belmore Ontario.  Died April 16, 1930, in Lapeer Michigan.  A highly respected physician.  Buried in Mt. Hope Cemetery, Lapeer, Michigan.

Fred B. Kay, born March 23, 1869, died March 11, 1944, served as postmaster in Lapeer Michigan.  Buried Mt Hope Cemetery, Lapeer, Michigan.

Margaret Kay (Maggie), born July 23, 1871, died July 3, 1889.  Buried McIntosh Cemetery.

Euphemia Kay, born December 10, 1874 in Belmore.  Died January 19 1950 in Saginaw, Michigan.  Buried Mt Hope Cemetery, Lapeer Michigan.  Married to Louis C. Cramton, a Member of Congress and Judge.

Good Morning Allan,

May I introduce myself?  I am Kathleen Cartwright Murray, a great-granddaughter of Margaret Monteith Kay, through her daughter Euphemia.  (This is the Margaret who is person #3 on the Huron County page of the
Monteith website).

I was directed to you by Inez Tarbet.  Inez and I "met" when our research intersected (Dr. John Kay and Catherine Miller -- parents-in-law of Margaret Monteith Kay).  My notes tell me that I had logged the existence of the Monteith site but had not spent much time there ... perhaps due to the lack of new information regarding my branch of research.  Mostly, however, I have devoted my energies to those branches of my family less well researched already.  I am fortunate enough to have a copy of "Monteiths and Monteith Descendants (revised)" by J. Ernest Monteith which has served nicely as a roadmap for my research.  If you are the Allan Monteith to whom "Cousin Ernie" dedicated his efforts, I am carrying coals to Newcastle by offering to share, but I do make the offer.

I would like to share some additional/corrective information for the website regarding Margaret Monteith and her family.  How would I go about doing that?

Thanks for your time,

My brother and I moved to England in the late seventies (he was 50 this year and i am 48) but the rest of the family is still in Northern Ireland around Belfast and Dungannon.  We have no direct relations anymore as they have all passed on however the 2nd cousins are all in Tyrone which seems close to your lot!  My 2nd cousin Eddie did a lot of work in the 60-70s and I will scan the family tree and send it on to you in the next wk or so.

I am based in Surrey England so I don't think there are any Monteiths down here except for my son Graham and daughter Shannon.  We are descended from Thomas Campbell Monteith who married three times Rebecca Ross; Mary Jane Higginson (our lot), and Mary Jane Ross.   Mary Jane Higginson  had Marcus Higginson, Henry Edward and Alexander Shannon.   My dad was Henry Edward, son of Alexander Shannon and Elizabeth Bankhead (hence my Bankhead middle names and my daughter's Shannon Elizabeth!

Thomas Campbell was born 1832 and died 1902 was from William Monteith and Sarah Campbell (married in1830

Hi Malcolm,
Just browsing your information on Alexander Monteith and his family.
I am descended from William who married Leena Croucher in Parramatta 1880.  Leena was the daughter of a convict and her parents were pioneers of the Parramatta and Hawkesbury areas.  We have no information that indicates that William ever went to New Zealand.  We do know that on his marriage certificate he gave his occupation as Auctioneer and on his Death Certificate he was a Mining Agent.  He died in 1907 Brisbane where his parents resided and he had only been in Queensland 12 months.
His first wife was Mary Eliza Stephen and they were married in 1865.  Children of this marriage, Agnes Gertrude 1866, Florence Helen 1868, Mimis Carcarse 1869, Adelaide Blackall 1871,  William was quite a busy boy.
Will send you more information when time permits. Will be minding one small grandson for the next 2 days.  By the way there is a granddaughter missing from your info.  Emma Louise Locke born 15/10/2001 (another due in May 03).
Leena Croucher's story is quite interesting, Tom Croucher has written a book on her family.
Cheers for now

Hello Malcolm,

Welcome to oz, sydney, and in paricular kirribilli!

Thanks for your response and the information. sydney george (natural) is just one of 3 stepchildren and 13 naturals. scott etc. are a couple of syds children.

Of the 16 only 3 are still alive. david, my father. myrtle, and trixie. i'll send you details of the subsequent issue over the next week or so. be warned, there's stacks.  Every Menteith in australia is a direct decendant of ian and annie saffron.

my main are of enquiry is who was ian edin menteith. it seems he was not who he claimed. the attached is a summary of my investigations to date. 'diary entries' of date etc. are not my main interest. i want some meat on the bones.

there is no apparent connection between 'menteith' and 'monteith' in australia. connections from the past are extremely difficult to link without specific birth, death and marriage details. as we know, the name has many
variations.  however the claim to the name comes from about 3 or 4 main disparate factors.

1. decendants from the earls of menteith. family names most common - graham or gilchrist. the earldom ceased in 1694.

2. decendants the earls of arran and knopdale. family name menteith, sir john menetet being the first earl. this peerage ceased in 1747.

3. from an era when surnames were uncommon, a name was usually trade or geographically related. men/mon/teith. worked for, lived in, belonged to the clan etc.

anyhowever, enough 'background'.

oral 'history' does seem to show a strong connection between ian and south africa. if you have any e.mail contacts, i'd appreciate them. particularly in the durban area. as you'll see from the attached, there's a sa
connection. most of the action in the zulu and boer wars occured in kwa zulu/natal province.

Dear Mr. Monteith;
I came onto your "Monteiths of Huron County" when I was looking for the KAY side of my husband's family. My husband was not a direct line of the Kays but we have always been interested in all members of our connected families and have collected what we could for each one.  I do know that his great grandfather (James Miller)'s sister, Catherine Miller and her husband John Kay, M.D. (Sr.,) were the in-laws of your Margaret Monteith.
I wanted to tell you I see an error in who you have for Margaret's husband.  John P. KAY, M.D. (son of Catherine and John above) and Margaret Monteith married in Huron County.  You may want to correct this on your site.
John P. and Margaret had eight children altogether but four died...three at ages 6 and 7 and one at age 17.  It was this John P. KAY, M.D. who volunteered in the American Civil War.  He was a contract surgeon in the Union Army.  Margaret and John first lived in Huron County and then in Bruce County.  John P. and the four children are buried there in the McIntosh Cemetery on the Huron/Bruce Counties border.  There is a headstone standing today with their inscriptions on it. Margaret is buried in the Mount Hope Cemetery in Lapeer, Lapeer County, Michigan.  She
followed her sons to Michigan after the death of her husband John P.'s and the death of her 17 year old daughter. John P. died at age 44. This left Margaret with the three sons you have listed and her daughter Euphemia, youngest.  These four children lived to adulthood.
I have a bit more information if you are interested. Ask me for what you would like and I will see if I have the information.
    Sincerely,   INEZ

Hello Laura,

I came across your message to Malcolm Monteith while browsing the Monteith Website, and was most interested to hear that you have a cousin with the same name as me in South Africa who has been doing some family tree
research. What particularly interested me is that although I've been living in Dunedin, New Zealand for some years, I was born and grew up in Pretoria, South Africa!  I'd always intended to research the South African branch of the family but never got around to it. My own father's name was William Robert Monteith, born in Bloemfontein in 1902 (same place as Tolkien!) and his father's name was James Monteith, born in Tarkastad in the Eastern Cape Province.  Further back than that is mystery - indeed, I'm totally ignorant as to when the Monteiths originally arrived in South Africa. I'd certainly be most interested in pursuing this and would be delighted to make contact with your cousin - or indeed to learn more of the family details which he sent to your dad.

For the record, I have 3 sons: Hugh John Duncan Monteith, born 18 June 1967 (a writer, currently living in Cape Town), Christopher William Monteith, born 15 March 1983 (studying Maths and Computer Science at the University of Otago) and Malcolm James Monteith, born 5 September 1984 (currently in his final year of high school here in Dunedin).  I'm married to Vivienne Joyce Monteith (born Norman); my full name is Brian Duncan Monteith and I'm a professor at the dental school at the University of Otago.

I see that in a week from now, you're having one of those milestone birthdays!  Many happy returns and have a good time! I hope to hear from you soon.

First let me say that you have a wonderful website.  My interest in the Monteith name has to do with a T. W. Monteith that was a minister in the Sarnia, Ontario region back in the late 1800's.  Do you have this individual in your tree?  If so, do you know anything about his circuit or the church he was affiliated with?  I am tracing the surname Bragg from the Sarnia area, and he shows as the minister who married a couple of members of this family.

Hello from down under,

My name is Warren Menteith, a grandson of Ian Edin (Hoyland) Menteith. On his wedding certificate (1900) and his ww1 military records he gives his birth as 1862 in Perth, Scotland.  His parents are given as Edin Ian Menteith
and Sarah Woodreeves.

Exhaustive searches cannot substantiate this, nor can any of his 'history' prior to 1900. it is thought he arrived in Australia between 1890 and 1900.

He was known as 'Jack' or possibly 'Johnny'.  There is also the possibility that Menteith was an assumed name, and that Hoyland was the real one.

As far as I am aware, all Menteiths in Australia are descendants of Ian.  If anyone wants post 1900 details please contact me.

Similarly, if anyone outside the family has info on Woodreeves or Hoyland linking with Menteith, I would love to hear.

She is Blanche Monteith married to Norman Scott, daughter of Samuel Monteith & Jean Galbraith - married in 1925 and both died in the 60's.

Samuel's children are Blanche, Samuel, Howard, Pearl and Dorothy.  All Live in NI except Dorothy who emigrated to London, Ontario in the 70's and still lives in that area of Canada.  All are still alive with children and

I have tried to see Samuel's [born 1894] relations on the Monteith site - namely his brothers & sisters - Robert, William, Tom, Maggie, Alexander, Archie, Charlie and Albert.  Perhaps you can advise.

I understand that the Monteith family in Canada - Nelson and Norville put together a Monteith Family Book which traces the generations back to Robert Monteith in 1775.

Would appreciate any comments.

During my young adult days, I would check the telephone directories in the towns and cities that I visited to see if any Monteiths were listed.  If there were, I would call them and ask if they had ever heard of Oscar Monteith.  No one had heard of Oscar.

Hi Malcolm
My name is Leigh Monteith.  I met you at the Monteith family reunion in St Thomas the second weekend of July.  You asked me to send you an email so you may be able to update some information.
I am the daughter of Alasdair Perris Monteith.  His parents were Thomas and Gwendolyn.  Unfortunately I do not know to much about my fathers history.  He himself passed away from cancer on March 4, 1985.  My mothers name is Linda Monteith.  I have a sister named Karen Winnifred Monteith-Jones.
I have a son named Alasdair "Jordan" Monteith.  He is 11 years old.  My sister has two children.  The first one is Ava Jones and the second is Chana Jones.
I know that I also have two half sisters.  I don't know either of them or really anything about them.  My father was married and divorced before he met my mother and married her.  His ex wifes name was Marguerite.  I know they had two daughters.  One named Judy and another named Karen as well.
I am not sure how much that will help you to adding to your family tree.  I realize we are not from the same clan.  However, I have always wanted to know more about the Monteith family as my father never spoke of them.  It was very interesting to meet everyone as it filled in some gaps in a way.  I would like to learn more about the Monteith family but don't really know how to go about doing it.
I would like to thank you for offer me to send you an email to add us to your list.
If there is anything that you think that I may find interesting about the family history I would welcome any of it.  The website itself was very informative and I will make sure to look at it quite frequently.
If you do wish to contact me for anything at all you can reach me at leigh.monteith@londonlife.com.  The address I am sending you this from is a friends address and I don't check this email on a regular basis.  The one listed above I am at 5 days a week.
Again, thank you for taking the time to set up this website.  For someone like me who has no information on the history of my family it is very informative, and very appreciated.

Dear Malcolm:

Daughter Joan and I really enjoyed the Monteith reunion on the 14th.  It has been 3 years since we were at the last reunion so it was nice seing you and all the rest of the attendees. We stayed overnight with Ray, Syd and Eileen then left early Monday morning.  I wanted to  drive up to Exeter where my ancestors settled but we did not have the time.  Maybe the next trip we will do that. Had a very pleasant flight back to California.  I am glad the reunion is in such good and capable hands which bodes well for it's continuence.  If all goes well healthwise I hope to be there next year. Hope to see you then.

I just discovered your site. My great grandfather Thomas Burke from Dublin in Ireland had a sister called Mary Florence Burke. She married Captain Robert Monteith. As far as I know he was born in Newtownmountkennedy in Wicklow Ireland in 1879 and died in USA in 1952. His daughter Florence Monteith Lynch wrote a book about him called "The Mystery Man from Banna Strand". He was involved in the fight for Irish independence. The book was in my family when I was a child but I'm not sure where it is now.

Her mother was Ethel Maud Julina Monteith 9th daughter to James Monteith.  While in Mich. visiting Hazel she let us look at the Monteith Family book and we noticed my husbands name is not in it.  This is because Dean's dad left him at 11 months and he didn't know that side of his family until 1980, the book being written in 1978.  Dean's dad is in it as well as his 1/2 sister Terry, we were wondering if there will be, or has been an updated version of this book; and who could I contact to receive info on it.  We have recently been trying to trace Dean's ancestry and would like to add our sons to it.  Any information on us would be useful.

P.S. Hazel's name in the book is Schiller, she was also married to James Keehl and now to Hubert Dawdy, she was born out of wedlock so she carried the Monteith name.

Dear Malcolm,
My name is Bonnie Keehl, my husband Dean's grandmother is Hazel Dawdy nee(Monteith). She lives in Tecumseh Mi. and was born in Canada; her family originally came from Scotland.  Hazel has a Monteith family book which tells some very interesting stories and traces the blood line back to the Earls of Monteith (the Stewart and the Graham lines)  Hazel is 82 and is the oldest daughter of Ethel Maud Julina Monteith the 9th child of  James Monteith.  My husband has only known his grandma since 1980. His dad Jim Keehl ran off when he was less than 1 year old, nevertheless we are now very close to his mother Hazel and she really tells some neat stories, if you'd like to hear a few or discuss the book more please reply, my husband is also trying to find some family out there and is very curious and enthusiastic about his heritage.  Hope to hear from you soon.

I am researching my mother's family, the CARMOUCHE line of Louisiana.  I would love to find a thread to get me unstuck with the Monteith branch.  Here's what I have:
The Carmouche's were Roman Catholic.
Earnest Monteith Sr. married Louise Carmouche and fathered two children:  Josephine and another child.
Josephine Monteith then married a Narcisse Joseph Carmouche of Big Cane, Louisiana (St. Landry Parish).  They had these children:   August Joseph Carmouche (my paternal grandfather), Edward, Stella, George, Marie Augustine, Marie Blanche, and Augustine.
August Joseph married Sena Waits, also of Big Cane, Louisiana.

In doing a "Monteith" search, I came across your website and am delighted to know that it exists.  Though my husband and I do not have a personal website, we are planning to do one in the near future and will
keep you apprised of our progress.

I would like to offer the following information now however.

My husband, Harry L. Monteith, is a professional magician who performs under the name of Harry Monti.  We can be reached at our home email:

For about six years we have been actively involved with a magic troupe that is comprised of mentally challenged individuals.  In 1999-2000, Harry was the National President of the Society of American Magicians and during this term as President, we were instrumental in the Society passing a resolution supporting a program to teach magic in the school systems to special ed students.  We have now developed a program which is in its infancy - in one classroom currently.  To find out more about our program, you may visit the SAM website at http://specedmagic.tripod.com

As you will note from this website, where magic is concerned, Harry is known as Harry Monti.  He is also a member of the International Brotherhood of Magicians and the Magic Circle in London (which elected
him to become a Member of the Inner Magic Circle of which there are never more than 200 members world wide.)

Best wishes for continued good luck with your Monteith pursuits.  As I obtain more definite information on this branch of the family, I will forward it to you.

We are an Australian branch of the Monteith Family. The records we have date back to Alexander Monteith born in County of Stirling, Scotland 27/10/1810. He married Ann Stevens 29/01/1823 of Camberwell England in Australia on Sept 23 1839. They had 3 children William (08/09/1840), Emelia Caroline (24/04/1842) & Walter Alexander (1/06/1848).

My Husband, Lindsay's, family is descended from Walter Alexander.  He married Emily Rowland in 1877 and they had 5 children: Walter Ernest, Annie Sophie, Sydney Rowland, Elsie May and Emily Maude.

Sydney Rowland married Jane Coulson in Queensland in 1907. They had 6 children: Harold Victor, Jean Gertrude, Vera, Eric (Jock), Ivan Frank and Allen Edmond.

Jock married Margaret MacLean and they also had 6 children: Barbara, Alison, Geoffrey Blyth, Peter Rowland, Elaine Janet and Lindsay Douglas.

We have 3 children : Clare, Anna and Alan.

Looking over your homepage and links, it is interesting to see how the same family names have cropped up over the years and over the continents. At present our son, Alan is doing a Student Exchange in Ashcroft, BC. He was surprised to find so many Monteiths and has sent us the homepage address.

If you would like other information please respond and we will send what we have. It will be interesting to see how we fit into the overall plan.

William Monteith moved to New Zealand where his line continues I believe.

With the help of another Monteith descendant I was able to find the Huron county branch - I had found it ages ago but was unable to find it the second time.....
There is a lot of this branch's info. missing or wrong especially #5  Mary Monteith did marry Thomas Taylor Leckie but on Sept. 4, 1904 - that is the day my father Thomas Monteith Lecke was born....he passed away on Dec. 15, 1986.
Donna (Leckie) MacLaren is the daughter of Monty Leckie not Mary & Tom Leckie.  I have a lot of other dates and married names for this branch if you are interested in updating or correcting your information.   All of this information is available in obits from the 1800's thro to 1990 which I have.  Several of this branch are buried at Baird's Cemetery - north west of Brucefield, Ontario (about 6 miles off Hwy 21 on a township road).  When the weather is nicer I intend to take a trip out and see if any of the tombstones have the maiden names or original "home countries" of spouses etc. listed.  Would you be interested in receiving a copy of my findings?

I would appreciate it if you could let me know if and where they are located - or if you would be interested in including a HURON COUNTY section  - I believe there are also Monteith descendants in the Exeter area of Huron County.
Thank you for the time & effort you have put into this project - but I would like to be able to locate our branch as well.

Good Morning!
My name is Mary Jo Monteith.  I live in Maine, USA.  I have been surfing and reading as I am very interested in the history of my family.
My father was Leon Edward (Jack) Monteith.  He was born in Caribou Maine in 1916 and passed away in 1992.  He had one sister, Freda, and two brothers, George and one other Im not sure of.  I never met his brothers, and only met his sister once, years and years ago.
I was wondering if you have any information on this part of the family?  What other information do you need from me?  Ill be happy to let you know whatever I can find out from my family.  (I warn you though, my mother, Leon's wife of 57 years, has alzheimers, and cant be depended on too too much for information.)
Please, write back, even if you don't have any information.  I would appreciate it very much.
