Subject: Monteiths from England

Hello Malcolm,

My name is Anthony Monteith and I was born in South Africa when my parents were working over there- my parents are English and moved back to England when I was 6 years old.

My father's name is Alfred Monteith- he has 3 brothers and 1 sister.

He was born in Birmingham England and raised in homes for orphans and poorer children. He knew his father only briefly, Andrew Monteith who I believe was a native of Northern Ireland.

Andrew Monteith was in the army (second World War) for many years and- I only know bits of info about him- my father (rightly so) never had time for Andrew as he had never been a figure in their lives. He did meet Andrew when my dad was 18- but it was only a few years later when Andrew was killed when a motorcycle hit him as he was crossing the road- apparently Andrew is buried in St Asaph in Wales- but the gravestone has collapsed and is very hard to find.

My Dad's real mum died whilst giving birth to Donald Monteith- the youngest of the brothers.

Richard Monteith resides way from the rest of the family in the midlands of England with his second wife.

My Dad is the second oldest, Shiela Day the eldest member (formerly Williams, formerly Monteith) lived in Northern Ireland in her early years then was sent to live in Scotland until she was 18 years old. She met my Dad at Birmingham train station and then proceeded to live in the midlands for a while- then moved to Lancashire where she now resides in Preston England.

My Dad's childhood years consisted of battling for survival in the homes and he looked after his younger brother Tony ( also known as Anthony earlier on)- it wasn't until my dad was around 15 that he knew he had two other brothers- he had vague memories as a child-but they were only shadows.
My Dad qualified as a painter decorator from college- and worked all around the UK - he moved to South Africa and lived their for 10 years.

My Dad has lived for many years in Leyland, England and is retired from the British Aeorospace Division - he was an aircraft sprayer/manufacturer.

My father himself is looking to eventually fill in the gaps of his own family tree.

I myself am currently living in Dublin Ireland and have been living in Ireland for 6 years now- I am 31 unmarried and an only child.

Rgds

Anthony Monteith

Your website is terrific!
My interest is in a Rebecca Monteith who married Daniel McFarlane about
1800.  Daniel was born about 1777, possibly at HollyHill.  There are 6 know
children:
Alexander (my ancestor) c 1800- died1886 at Amulree ON CAN. (near Stratford)
Patrick  c 1803 - 1847 He stayed in IRE
Rebecca c 1808 - 1886  came with husband to Amulree
Nancy c 1810
John c 1812 - came to ON
George c 1816 married 1850 in Leckpatrick Pres. Church

My question is: could Rebecca be a sister to the Robert Monteith at the
beginning of your Northern Ireland page?

I was really glad to find your web site.  My maiden name was Diane Sutton. I am connected to the Monteiths through both my parents. My mother, Donna Scott, is the daughter of Fred Scott and Rebecca McFarlane of Delaware Twp. Fred was the son of William, who was a son of John Scott and Mary Monteith of Tyrone.

My father's mother, Muriel Courtis was a sister of Estelle who married Hubert Sutton. One of their daughters, Lorna, married Stewart Monteith, of Delaware, and another, Eileen, married Gordon Monteith

All the above information can also be found in the Monteith book by Ernest Monteith.

My husband and I live in Hawkesbury Ontario, east of Ottawa, but my parents and family live in the London area.
I am particularly interested in finding out more about my ancestors from Tyrone County.

My name is Kenneth Monteith, and I'm living in Tulsa, Oklahoma. I know very little about my family history other than I am a Monteith. My family was able to visit Scotland and see the Port of Menteith, from whence I'm assuming we came -- but I'd like to get some definite answers. The information I have so far is sketchy at best; I'll have to interview my grandpa this Thanksgiving. I do remember getting quite a few nasty looks in Scotland over that whole "William Wallace" thing, so I'd like to find out how closely I'm related to Sir John. But more immediately, I'm interested in the Monteith coat of arms. Is the one displayed on the webpage accurate? Are there variations?
Thanks, and I hope I can help fill the void in the American Monteiths.

My husband's father Robert William Dean Montieth just passed away on June 6, 2003. He spelled is name as MONTIETH because this is how it is appeared on his birth certificate. He was the son of Archibald Monteith and Margaret Brentoch (3rd marriage) born on February 29, 1932 in Regina, Saskathewan. Robert is survived by his sister Ruth Christine Monteith (born Febuary 23, 1933) and his youger sister Lorraine Florence Monteith (born February 17, 1934) passed away in 1987 I believe. He was married to Bernice Mabel Moore (passed away July 31, 1999) and has 2 children Kirk Dean Montieth (born January 4, 1958) and Debbie Lynn Miller (born January 15, 1959). Kirk was married in 1985 to Gail Lynn Fraser and Debbie was married in 1980 to Lawrence Miller. Would love to hear from any relatives...

Hi, my name is Tammy Mantooth Richardson. I have heard that our name was originally Monteith. I am sure you have heard all the stories. Well my question is this, have you made a connection between the Monteith name and the Mantooths of Cocke County, TN. USA? All my ancestors are from there. I live in McKinney, TX and have been researching our family tree for about 3 years. I go back to Cherokee Tom Mantooth born 1760. It is believed he may
be one of 2 brothers from Scottland. Henry Monteith and Tom. It is also suggested that he may possibly be the nephew of one of the two brothers the son of the other. Any information you can provide would be appreciated.

Subject: Mantooth Family

Hi!
I've been researching my husband's family tree and came across your website on an Alta Vista search.  Your site was the only one the search came up with!

I've been told by the genealogist in my husband's family that the name Mantooth was originally Monteith.  I see on your site here that it was in many forms down through the years.     The info I have on my husband's section of the family begins with John Mantooth, born in 1789 in Virginia.  His parents were Thomas Mantooth (born "about 1800") and Elizabeth Phillips (I'm not sure about his spouse, her birthdate is "about 1764"...  These birthdates are iffy.)  Thomas Mantooth's parents were apparently Thomas J. Mantooth, born 30 Sept., 1808 in North Carolina and Elizabeth Phariss.  In a later generation, Albert Mantooth, born on 30  Sept., 1833 in Newport, Cocke County, Tennessee, moved  to Homer, in Angelina County , Texas (near the city of Lufkin, TX).  He died there 30 Aug, 1893.  He had two spouses, first Mary Sisk and then Mary Richard Hall.  This branch of Mantooths has settled in the Lufkin, TX area.  My husband's great grandmother was Hester Flora Mantooth, born in 1871 in Lufkin.  She died in 1932, in
Lufkin.

Does this family seem related to the Monteiths mentioned on your website?  Is anyone looking for a Thomas Mantooth from North Carolina?

My husband's family lost touch with the Mantooth family in Lufkin.  They are mentioned often in an Angelina County history book, as prominent people in the area.  My mother-in-law is beginning to be interested in her genealogy and I'd
like to find out where these Mantooths (or Monteiths) connect with others here in America, and where they came to the US from.

Thanks!

Subject: Question RE: Monteiths of Tyrone County, North Ireland
Date: Fri, 8 Aug 2003 17:56:30 -0700

Hi Malcolm;

I'm hoping that I can get a bit of help from my cousins in finding my connection. In documenting my line I have found some twists and turns but have finally nailed my first ancestor in the US:

#187  JAMES MONTEETH; in 1817 he has been in Fayette county for upwards of 20 years; was born in County Tyrone, Ireland and has been within the jurisdiction of the United States since January 29, 1795; witness is James
D. Cope in 1817.
Othcourt: Naturalizations 1802-1830: Fayette Co, PA

I also have :

Robert Monteith, farmer, Monroe Township, Wayne County, was born in Fayette County, Pennsylvania, August 20, 1820, a son of *****James and Esther(Chambers) Monteith, the father being a native of County Armagh, Ireland.***** Our subject remained in his native county till twelve years of age, when his parents removed to Marshall County, West Virginia, where he was reared to manhood, remaining there about twenty years. He was reared on a farm, his father being a farmer by occupation, and his education was received in the common schools. When quite young he began working at the carpenter's trade which he followed for many years. September 11, 1845, he was married to Leah M. Shepherd, daughter of Benjamin and Mary(Gregg)Shepherd, of Virginia. They have a family of five children-Martha P., W.H., John, Charles F. and James C. In 1856 Mr. Monteith removed with his family to Iowa, locating in Des Moines County, going thence to Henry County, Iowa, where he resided till 1864. He then came to Wayne County, Iowa, and bought his farm in Monroe Township of J. Vance, on, which he has since resided. He has a fine residence and good barn and out buildings, and his farm, which contains sixty acres is under high cultivation. Mr. Monteith is a consistent member of the Methodist Episcopal church of Genoa. Politically he affiliates with the Democratic party.

I'm thinking that perhaps the truth of this is that James was from Omagh, Tyrone, Ulster, Ireland. I'm estimating that James was probably born about 1774. Perhaps he was a brother to the Robert Monteith on your website. He doesn't appear to show up in the 1796 Flax Growers List as I would expect (he likely sailed in 1794).

Any help out there?

Thanks;

Hi Malcolm:

I regret very much not being able to attend the Monteith reunion this year.  I hope that next year I will be able to attend and renew my long time association with the reunion and all the old friends I have been priviliged to know for so many years.  However, being very close to ninety years of age, that hope may be a tad iffy!

I wanted to call your attention to the fact that at Alma College  in Alma, Michigan their new library, I believe, is named the Monteith Library, and was so named in honor of Rev.John Monteith, the co-founder and first president of the University of Michigan.   I have a considerable amount of the history of that gentleman which I would be  more than willing to share with you if you wish.

I hope this year's reunion was a resounding success.  I missed it very much, but getting there from California presents many problems which are difficult for me to get a handle on, but I will try!

Hope all is well with you and take care,

Allan Monteith

I am looking for information on the John Monteith family tree pre 1827.

John Monteith married Rebecca Kerr in Old Monkland, Lanarkshire and they had a son John born in 1827.

Does anyone have any family geneology before this date?  If not, I will be travelling to Scotland at the end of July 2003.  Could someone provide information on where/how to do research?

Thank you,

Hi, Malcolm:

I am a MONTEITH descendant on my mother's side. My line, though New-Brunswick-based, is not connected to the line posted on your site now. At least, it's not connected on this side of the Atlantic! What are the rules for posting and sharing info that you adhere to for your site.

I'm more than willing to share my research, as long as I am both credited AND not held responsible if the "family legends" turn out not to be true ;-) .

Can you let me know the rules, and what format you need the material in to be able to post it. I can supply the html coded pages for you to post (without identifiers of the living people).

I have been searching my tree for 30 years now (I'm 48), and love the hunt. As you, I'm always searching for more.

I noted on the internet that there is to be a reunion of Ontario Monteiths on the 13th July and as I will be nearby
in Hamilton I wondered if it would be in order for me to attend your reunion with the friends I will be staying with in Ontario.

My forebears were initially from Stirling, Scotland, and with an interest in my own family tree and clan I thought perhaps it would be lovely to meet with members of your Monteith Clan if that would be agreeable with all concerned.

I am amazed that your annual reunion has been in progress for 77 years. Are there many Monteiths in Ontario and could you tell me a little about your annual reunions? I will quite understand if your reunion is for immediate family members only but am interested in anything connected with the Monteith Clan.

Look forward to hearing from you in due course.

From: Maureen King <mking@pacific.net.au>
To: <monteim@sentex.net>

I have just stumbled upon your family history page  It is quite fascinating. I notice Ian Menteith was listed as an Engine Driver.  There was a Union called the Federated Engine Drivers and Firefighters Association or something similar to that.  I know this because their offices were on the top floor of the Metal Workers Building in East Melbourne when I worked for the AMWU for a while.  They amalgamated with the CFMEU.  Engine Drivers worked in power stations too I think.  So it might be worth trying that to see if any records turn up.  Many Australian unions had head offices in
England and were run like a Guild you might turn up something in England.

John Smith is a terrible name to have to trace.  Have you tried the Victorian Trades Hall they may be able to give you more exact information.

I am looking for wars my grandfather might have been involved in before he arrived in Australia in 1867 at the age of 23.  A relative has just told me he won the Iron Cross but I have no idea where he would have served and think it highly unlikely as the dates do not match up with his life line.

So that is how your URL came up on my computer.

Good luck.

I've been tracing my family tree for many years and have come to a standstill with my MONTEITH branch.   The last known information I have is when George MONTEITH b1849 married Jane Lillie or Notman b 1847 in Hawick, Scotland.   They had twelve children, ten of whom survived, and two of whom left Scotland to settle in America, George and Johnny.  The remaining offspring stayed in the UK.

Apart from the fact that George's parents were Archibald MONTEITH and Isabella GRAY, I have no information about them or their origins.

My husband and I left the UK in 1966 with our two young children and settled in Timaru, in the South Island of New Zealand, then we re-located to Vanuatu in 1994 and intend staying here.

I would love to hear from anyone who may think they are related, or in any way connected to my branch of the MONTEITH family.

Doing a search, I came across your website, and have some information pertaining to the Monteith Family under the section of New Brunswick Clan, St John Valley connection.
I'm Nelson Henry Monteith, son of William Henry Monteith, listed in that document as number 38, with one daughter, Waydette
Actually, William Henry Monteith had five children, Loyce Marie, Nelson Henry, Waydette Marie, Jeffrey Andrew, and Roberta Ann.  He married Elizabeth Currier around 1940, and he died in 1990.  He was the son of William Henry Monteith II who was married to Pauline Wright, and had several brothers and sisters, George, Eugene, Dorothy, and Coral.

My grandfather ( I knew him as Henry, but apparently his name was also william henry, as was his father's name, my great grandfather, known as 'gramp billy'

Scovil, Albert, and Dolly were siblings of my grandfather, William Henry (2)

I hope this might be of use, I'm happy to have found your site, it makes interesting reading

My great-great grandmother was one Mary Monteith from Co. Tyrone.

She married a gentleman named Hugh Hamilton.  They had at least one child, my great grandmother, Jane Hamilton, for whom I have only a date of death, 1866.   Jane Hamilton married Alexander Scott and they resided in Laghey at the home site named "Gardrum".

Jane had her first child, my grandmother Mary, in 1866.  I am assuming from that date that Jane may have been born near the date of 1840.  She had a son, William, in 1867.  She died in childbirth along with her third child, Rebecca, on 2/14/1866 and they are buried in Castlederg.

Because most of my family, including Alexander Scott, are buried in Laghey, I have not had the opportunity to research this family in Castlederg.  In fact, until yesterday when I found your website, I didn't have a clue about Jane Hamilton's background except for her parent's names.

Now I am so excited because I believe the Mary Monteith, daughter of Robert Monteith and Ruth Campbell, may be my Mary Monteith!  The date of her brother's birth (1799) puts her in the right era.  Having her first child in 1866 she was probably born c.1840, a possible date for  Elizabeth's sixth child.

If my assumptions are correct.....what is my next move?  I would like to find a marriage license for Hugh and Mary, but I don't know how to go about that.

I would appreciate any information you could provide.  If we can pin this down I have a wealth of information about Mary's future descendants, the McClays of Laghey, many of whom emigrated to the USA.

Thank  you so much for creating a wonderful web site.  I feel very privileged to, perhaps, be connected to such a creative and lovely family.  This family history hunting is like putting a giant jigsaw puzzle together...and you have a HUGE number of pieces possible with your offering.

My mother emigrated to the United States from Donegal, Ireland in 1925.  Her parents were Andrew and Mary McClay, Laghey.  I have been researching the McClay side of the family, but would love to find my grandmother's family.  Her mother was Jane Hamilton who married Alexander Scott and settled in Laghey.  Jane's mother was Mary Monteith from Co. Tyrone and her father was Hugh Hamilton.  I have absolutely no information about Mary Monteith but it my guess that she had Jane about 1840 (Jane's first child was born in 1861).  The date seems to match your Mary Monteith, daughter of Robert Monteith and Ruth Campbell.  I would SO appreciate any information you might have that would either confirm or deny my assumption.   Thank you so much.

Hi Malcolm;

I'm proud to be of the Monteith line. I'd like to share a bit about my line. My Father's direct line extends to a Gentleman Thomas Monteith who arrived in the colony of Virginia in about 1714. He was a merchant from Glasgow and was a man of some means. I have his line back to Walter Stewart and Mary Menteith circa 1220, and beyond. My great-great grandmother retained her Father's name (Steed) for her son and I am the fourth generation of that line. I am descended from Thomas through his descendants James and Samuel, who saved the Monteith name from extinction in Virginia. Thomas' other son, John, married a Cherokee woman and changed his line's name to Mantooth. Please, forgive the rough form of the information that I am sharing, but I wanted to take this opportunity to make an initial contact.

I hope to talk to you again, soon.

I know nothing about my great grandparents, (not even their names.) except that my great grandmother was native American and spent time in India before coming here. My grandfather (Andrew Monteith), her son, has lived in and around Melbourne, I think for his entire life, and I know that he was once a drover. He married, (Claire) and my Dad (R. W. All the other kids in the family were girls, and my father had two daughters himself.  This is a shame, because I don't want the name to disappear from this branch of the family when I marry.

Anyway, thanks for your terrific website! It has really inspired me to keep searching and researching my family's past.  I will send more info when I can, which will definitely be soon. From the Monteiths of Victoria, Australia, happy new year!
