Good afternoon-

I am writing to you concerning a painting Jack Monteith (“ Marietta Square at Christmas,” 1986) donated to Marietta Junior High some years ago.  We are now the Marietta Sixth Grade Academy and are re-dedicating the art gallery of local artists.  I am a teacher of gifted students, and our job is to write and assemble short biographies on each artist.  I am writing to see if it would be possible for my students to get some biographical information on Mr. Monteith after the first of the year and what the best way of going about that would be.

Thank you very much for your assistance and consideration.

Please can you help?  I am trying to trace an old pen friend of my mums.  Her maiden name was Monteith and her first name is Dale. My mum lost contact with her in the mid sixties just before Dale was due to marry someone in the Canadian Air Force.  Unfortunately she doesn't know his surname.  She met Dale through Girl Guides when they visited England so I guess if they were both Guides at the same time Dale must have been born around 1939 as this is my mums year of birth and they were Guides during the early fifties.  The last known address mum had for Dale was: 550 Empire Avenue, Fort William, Ontario, Canada. My mum's name was Margaret Hart, she is now Margaret Osborne.  My name is Sarah Christie and I would be grateful if you could provide us with any information at all.
Yours Sarah

Good afternoon,

Just came across your website.  Today I was in a jewelry store, that has an area of estate pieces.  Much of it is "vintage."  My husband enjoys wearing cufflinks and while looking through a section, I came across a very "interesting" find.  I decided to purchase them for them.

The cufflinks are on the "original card" which says "Made In Britain," "Monteiths of Glasgow."  The M has been rubbed off over the years, a little part still being visual.  They're oval shaped, encased with cloth,  which we decided has to be the "Tartan," for the Monteith family.  Of course it is a plaid, with colors of red, navy, green, yellow & a stripe of white.  The cufflinks are held together with a chain and the outside of ovals are gold or brass. To a collector of Monteith memorabilia, these would probably have significant meaning.  Should you know someone who
has an interest in this sort of thing, you are welcome to give them my e-mail add.

I understand the importance of Genealogy.  Four years ago, I learned I'm a direct descendant of Richard Warren, who came to America on the "Mayflower."  My line goes back 12 generations on my paternal great grandmother's side.  As a result, I was able to join the Mayflower Society.  This has been a meaningful highlight in my life.

Sincerely,

Debora Griffin Mann

Hi my name is Nicola Lumsden and I'm 16.  I've recently been trying to trace my grandfather a Mr. Patrick Monteath who was believed to have married a Mrs. Edgar and ran a hotel in London called the Sussex hotel. It was also believed that they had children, particularly a daughter named Sue. Although I am not sure he may or may not have had a distinctive tatoo on his face believed to have been just a spot, but he also liked horses and drank in the Monkey puzzle.

He also had another daughter named Dianne in Newcastle to a Cecilia Dickson. Also he used to have a pink Cadillac.

Dianne is my mother and she has been searching for him for over 20 years, any information regarding him or any other person whom may be of help please contact me at rubbajaw@hotmail.com

Subject: RE: Monteith/Monteilth in Louisiana.

I am researching my family.  I am hoping someone can give me a lead.

Alfred Monteilth got into some sort of trouble (during the French Revolution?) and was sent by the family via ship from France to New Orleans.  He was said to be a “hot-headed socialist from France”.  I think his views were what caused his trouble there, and I am assuming it was during the revolution.

Alfred went to work teaching the children of relatives on a family plantation in Louisiana.  He sent for another brother to come, Edmond.  Edmond married the daughter, Louise Carmouche, of the plantation owner, “Old man Carmouche”.  They had Josephine and Erneste Monteilh.  There were other children, but they all died in a yellow fever epidemic.

I would like to hear from anyone with ties to this line, or more information to share.

Thanks for any help you can give.

I have Robert Monteith m. 30 Jul 1870 in NB to Margaret Ann Watt.  Have not found anymore records for Robert.  Only known child John Watt Monteith b. 18 Jul 1872 is named Grant (name of Margaret's second husband Charles) on 1881 and 1901 census in NB.  On 7 Dec 1904 John Montieth [misspelled on record] married Jane Mary (or Mary Jane - former on marriage registration, latter on death registration) Bailey (1881-1962), daughter of Walter Arthur Bailey & Fanny Wagstaff.  The marriage occurred in Vancouver, BC.  The death of John is yet to be found but he is deceased by 4 Jan 1962 when his wife dies and her death registration indicates she is widowed.  One known daughter, Amy Rose, informant of mother's death.  Other children likely.

His Mother: Maude (born Dec 9, 1890 died June 1978)
His Brother: Bill Monteith which had a son Eric and daughter Lisa both of which were born late 50s/early 60s. I used to play with Eric when we would visit when I was younger.   I do remember an Elizabeth Monteith when I went to my uncle Bill's funeral around the Lowell/Charlotte area.  There were some other Monteith's that lived down the road from them but can't remember their names.  I'm hoping to reconnect with some of them and also find out more about further back in our family.

Hello again,
If you get this before the reunion, perhaps you can share it with others.

Thanks,
Barb

Dear friends and family of Allan and Bette Monteith,

We are writing to give you the sad news that our father, Allan, passed away on May 4th, 2004 after a brief illness. While it was a time of sorrow for our family, it gave us pause to reflect on our idyllic childhood. Our parents filled up our days with swimming, picnics, friends, western travel, Houghton Lake vacations, Brownies, Girl Scouts and of course, Michigan football. Dad only missed 5 home games in 45 years.

While Dad was deeply saddened by our mom and sister’s passing, his last year was quite remarkable.  He still managed to do a ton—an ambitious schedule for even younger folks. He continued to work on the family genealogy project as well as write a family history book—mostly on the computer I might add. Amazing! In 2002 he discovered a “lost” branch of the family on the internet. Of course they didn’t know they were “lost”. Joan and Barb took our dad to Huntington Beach and Palm Springs to have a long weekend with these wonderful relatives. It was definitely one of the highlights of his year. After meeting them for 2 minutes we knew they were family.

A few months later Allan was seen dancing and partying with his daughter Joan and son-in-law David Miller at his Cass Tech High School Reunion in Traverse City, Michigan.  The summer months were filled with watching grandchildren (children and adults) playing soccer, basketball, acre and baseball as well as attending a Gershwin concert in San Francisco. Fall brought happiness and frustration watching his beloved Wolverines play football.

The whole month of November was spent celebrating Dad’s 90th birthday ending with a huge family gathering attended by all his California family including his many grandchildren and great grandchildren.

One of the highlights of his year came in November when he was the honored guest of PhotoSig, a local photography club. At the dinner a series of photographs that he and his daughters compiled were the main attraction. The collection featured photos taken in 1935 when Dad was 22 and had travel across the country to San Francisco with his cousin Bill McLain; during this trip he took several beautiful photographs of the city on an old Argus camera. In 2003, Barb, Joan and Bonnie took Dad back to the spots where the original pictures had been taken to recapture images of the same locations. These pictures, both new and old, were then enlarged and framed to create an extraordinary exhibit. You can see them at this site:

http://floobydust.netfools.com Click on PhotoSig Gallery on the left side of the screen. Then scroll and click on The Wall, then click on SF Then and Now (or San Francisco Then and Now, whichever name is there). If you visit the site you will see that the Golden Gate Bridge and the Bay Bridge were under construction and would not be finished for another couple years. My dad said he remembered taking the ferry from Oakland to San Francisco. At the end of the evening, as a gesture of appreciation, Dad donated his Argus camera, the one that actually took the original pictures, to the club.

Dad’s passing has been sad for us all, and yet, it is amazing to think of all that he continued to enjoy and achieve in his life, well into his later years. It was a gift that he was with us as long as he was, enjoying the growth of his children and the expansion of his family. Family was such an important part of who he was, and although he was the last member of our family to carry the Monteith name, passing the legacy of the family history was his passion and ultimately his final gift to us. For that we will always be grateful.

We appreciate who you have been to our father and for what you contributed to his life. We know he valued your love and friendship as evidenced by the many cards, letters and emails from you that he saved over the years. Your friendship was truly a blessing to him throughout his life and, especially, in his later years. Thank you for valuing and loving him as much as we did.

Warmly,

Barb, Joan and Bonnie    (his daughters)

My name is Michael Roy Monteith.  I currently live in Gallatin, Missouri with my wife, daughter, and son.  My father was Roy Edward Monteith Jr. (born  July 25, 1923 died June 78) He was born and raised in Lowell NC.
His Father: Roy Edward Monteith Sr. ( I think he died around 1964)

Thanks
Michael R. Monteith

Dear Mr. Monteith,

I am researching my family history. My great great grandfather was named William Forsythe. William Forsythe was supposedly born in Castlederg in County Tyrone. He was born about 1824. In 1844 he joined the Royal Irish
Constabulary and was the first man to retire, in 1874, from that organization after a new law was passed. He collected a pension and died about 1880 in Belfast. William supposedly had three brothers though his father died when he was a small child. I am wondering if you might be able to provide me with some information concerning the Forsythe's in Castlederg.

William's father is one of my brick walls. Thank you in advance.

Sincerely Yours
Iginio Fitzpatrick

My name is Mike Weller, but my mother was born Betty Marie Monteith.  Her father was Charles Hamilton Monteith, who was born in Hanibal, Ohio in 1897 (I think).  His father's name was Edward R. Monteith.  I'm sending your URL to my cousin, who is presently researching our genealogy.

I have also heard of branches of the family in the Carolinas and Virginia.  When they first came from Scotland, they really travelled.  I enjoyed your website, and will pass on any information that might be relevant.

Good luck!

Hello, my name is James Malcolm Monteith ( Jim ) I was born in Birmingham, Alabama in 1954 and I am descended from Thomas Mantooth, born 1818 in Cocke county, Tennessee.  Thomas is as far as my family as gotten back into our ancestary.  I am trying to find the family tree information backwards from Thomas.  Especially interested in the original immigrants from Scotland.  Our family legend says that a father and two sons immigrated from Scotland.  There last names were Monteith.  One of the sons married a Cherokee Indian woman and was bannished from the family.  He changed his name to Mantooth.  Thomas Mantooth's grandson Esau Mantooth (born 12-23-1845, died 5-27-1910) changed the name back to Monteith when he fled to Jasper, Alabama from Knoxville, Tennessee area.

My name is David James Monteith, I was born in Enniskillen County Fermanagh N Ireland in 1966.  My late father was William John Monteith from the village of Clabby near Fivemiletown in county Fermanagh.  In 1977 our family moved to Castlederg County Tyrone, this was my mothers home town.  In my class at school there were two other Monteiths who were cousins but not related to myself.
I now live with my wife and two sons in Scotland (near Inverness).  I joined the Royal Air Force 18 years ago which has allowed me to travel the world.  I haven't ran into many other Monteiths but my namesake was headmaster at Gordonstoun school in Morayshire for a time.  I found this out  coinsidently because my phone number was one digit different from the school and I took a call asking for David Monteith.  They had of course the wrong number but after a confused conversation the problem was sorted.  I did the lottery that week but of course I didn't win.

My name is Nancy Morrison.  My g.grandfather was William Monteith from Castlederg, Co. Tyrone, Ireland. He was born in 1836 and died in Prospectville, Horsham Twp., Montgomery Co., Pennsylvania.  He married Mary Ann Steever b.1842 d. 1923 (same as above).  A cousin of mine says that Blythe was Wm.'s brother and that he went to Australia from Ireland.  He also married a Martha Cain.  Wm. and Blythe's parents were John Monteith and Mary Hamilton.  They also had a brother Samuel, Sr. and Robert and sisters Rebecca and Letitia.  There may be other siblings.  All of the siblings except Letitia resided in the area mentioned above including Bucks Co., Pa. (Robert).  Glad to share any info with you regarding the Monteiths.

Thanks, Nancy

Hello,

My Name is David Mantooth, and I am trying to trace my name back to it’s origin. I have come across a story that tells of two brothers with the last name of Monteith.

They had a rather ugly falling out and one of the brothers changed his last name to Mantooth. It would seem easy enough just to change a couple of vowels, however it does leave the trail cold around 1749. Can you shed any light on this for me?

Thank you and God Bless,

David.

Hi.

First of all, congratulations and thank you for the wonderful job you have done on your web site. I came across it only a couple of weeks ago and it has inspired me to begin researching my own family tree more thoroughly. I will post the information that I uncover.

I don't know if you have considered having a book list of titles of a more general nature, but if you do, one I would heartily recommend is "How the Scots Invented the Modern World" by Arthur Herman. It is valuable in that it puts the diaspora of Scots throughout the British empire into historical context and makes one extremely proud to have a Scottish name as well.

By the way, I recall one person posed the question as to whether a Monteith from another branch of the family would be able to attend the Monteith reunion in Ontario. If this is a possibility, I would love to come out there some time.

Thank you again so much for maintaining this site.

Cheers.

Hi, my name is Tamara Monteith. I have always questioned my heritage and the unfamiliar last name I have been given.  I honestly know very little about the Monteith family's heritage and connections but I am extremely interested. My two brothers and I was born in Georgia, where my father Mitch Monteith and his family have lived for generations. Although this information will doubtfully help you piece together your puzzle I wish you this best of luck.

I have just been looking at the web-site and hope that someone may have some information that can help me.  I am Scottish and the Montieths I have information on go back to 1800.  The family I have found information on are mainly in central Scotland  however I am aware of some Monteiths who settled here from Ireland and I also think that some of them emigrated (though I don't know where to).

Any information would be great.

How does one correct erroneous information recorded on the website?

Thank you.

Reply:

Thanks for your recent e-mail asking about erroneous material on the
website.

Although I try to maintain the highest degree of integrity and accuracy for
this website, most of the sources are from personal records and data
obtained from generally reliable sources such as newspaper articles, or
other media publications including the internet.  As a result, the old
adage, "To err is human" occasionally applies and some mistakes do crop up.

If the error is from an outside source such as a newspaper, it is probably
best to take up the matter with them.  If it deals with genealogical data
such as names, dates of birth (death) or the like, please send me the
details about such and I will attempt to check my sources and if the mistake
is substantiated, I will make the correction straight away.

Best regards,

Malcolm Monteith

Sir

Do you have access to the "London Gazette"?
On their "Archive Page" I placed the name "Ian Menteith"
and received 1 responce-P.7 Gazette Issue 30373 published 6 Nov 1917.
For some reason however the page would not come up on the computer screen
ALso if he served with Australian Forces-did you have access to Australian
War Memorial Records & decorations online?

Sincerely

P.F
