Just wanted to send you a note of thanks.... I have some family background that I would like to add at some point - to the best of my recollection, my family came over in the mid 1800's and settled in the Chicago area (5 brothers) and went their separate ways from there. My great grandfather lived in Wisconsin - my grandfather moved to North Dakota and we have, again, split off from there. I am living in St.Paul, MN. The details are packed away somewhere.
Great site,...

Very glad to see your
information on the web. I am the grandson of Charles Herbert Monteith (born 1898
deceased 1956) and am searching for genealogical information about his father
J.J. Monteith.
I believe J.J. Monteith came from Kentucky (maybe
around Louisville) to Greene Co. Arkansas in the late 1880's. J.J. Monteith had
a Brother named Benjamin who had three children one of whom may have settled in
Cinncinati, Ohio.
Can you help fill in some of the gaps?

Hello fellow Monteith researcher,
I have only just found your site on the Monteith family and I would like to offer my congratulations on the trouble and care you have taken. I started to research my branch of the family and I have found that I am descended from Alexander Monteith who I understand was born at Leith, Scotland about 1810. Family legend has it that he first went to New Zealand and then later settled in Sydney and was married to Ann Stevens in 1839. He then moved to Queensland where we suspect he was a mining assayer. He had three children and then he died in 1886.
I am descended through the son William, then his son Alexander and then his son Alex. I am anxious to find details of the original Alexander, when he might have left Scotland and any of his ancestors.
I have been using a friends computer to log onto the net and he would pass on any information that you sent by email to me. My postal address is:

Hi.
Found your website while checking for links to my
site. What you have developed on your site is interesting and informative. My
name is Jonathan Monteith and I live in the US, Chicago, Illinois area. I don't
know much about our family geneology, however, my younger brother Bruce has some
knowledge. I have three brothers that live in the area: Joseph, Michael, and
Bruce. Our father Joseph lives in Anaheim, California area. He will be visiting
next month which may be a good time to ask about our family
lineage.
Good luck on your site and feel free to contact

Monteith House beautiful old resort home, where my dad was born. My granddad was
John Monteith. He married (2nd marriage) Catherine Tobin. They had 5 children -
Gerald who settled in Michigan; Howard, who has a son Frank in Toronto; May who
married Hodson and moved to S.Africa (Pat and Antony?); Violet who married a
lawyer and settled in Huntington, Que and my dad, Edward Hamilton Monteith.

published on the
WWW.
My ggggg-grandfather, Thomas Mantooth is believed to be the son of
John Monteith who was the son of Thomas Monteith (1694-1764) from Glasgow,
Scotland. Thomas Mantooth was married to Phillis Gallop and they lived in
Richmond, Virginia. However, some believe Thomas was the son of Henry Monteith
who lived in Greene County, Tennessee. I don't know which is correct. Please
include me in your email directory.
Thanks. Can't wait to see your

created; very interesting!
I have not had time to put together any information for you, but I will in the near future. In addition, I am going to contact one of my relatives that has done some research on my branch of the Monteiths to see what they can contribute. I am sure they will be most interested in what you are doing as well.
I was surprised to see so many Johns in your list. That was my father's name.
More later. My best.

Hi Malcolm
I'm impressed!! The web site looks good. I was talking to my mum last weekend about Monteith history (she isn't Monteith) but she told me that Albert Monteith - solicitor in Omagh, Co. Tyrone - did a family tree several years back. She said he had gone back several generations, and although didn't find out that we were related he found that there were several first names that were common in both families (including Robert, my father and his own name Albert). I will ask my mother about it again - maybe she can tell me if he found out anything about the Castlederg Monteiths. Unfortunately Albert is dead now, but his son may have the material still.
Best wishes

My name is Iain Monteath and I

my life. My father (Allan) does originate from Scotland but he came to England
many years ago where he married an English woman (my mum Rosemary), which means,
of course, that I am half Scottish (which is an arse when England plays Scotland
at anything). I have a younger brother called Alistair who is 12.
If you need any more information regarding the Monteath family tree do feel free to mail me again and I should be able to dig up some info but don't expect a speedy response as I am 9 weeks away from my exams.
I wish you luck in what you are doing and hope it goes

Dear
Malcolm:
I was very pleasantly surprised this evening when I turned on my
computer and found your message. I don't know how you got my name but I am glad
you did. I have just recently got on the Internet and I am struggling with it.
There is a lot about the Internet that I don't know but I am
trying!
I think your idea of starting a Homepage is great and I would like to participate or whatever I need to do.
My ancestors came to Lanark county in Eastern Ontario from Scotland in 1836/7. I have done extensive research on them and have gathered a great deal of information on them. I realize that we are probably not related in the near term but I believe the Northern Ireland Monteiths came from Scotland after the Battle of the Boyne so I think they are of the same stock. My great great grandparents eventually settled in Huron county near the town of Exeter and some of their descendants still work the original farms they homesteaded.
I can send you a much more complete and comprehensive history if you wish but I would rather do it via regular mail if you don't mind. Also, are you aware of the Monteith (Northern Ireland) reunion every year at St. Thomas? My wife and I attend it every year even though we are not related. They all consider me their "cousin"!! Last July was the 70th reunion! I know you would be most welcome.
Let me know if you would be interested in more information on my Monteith line.

Malcolm,
Thank you for letting me know about the
Monteith Home Page. I'm afraid I don't have much to contribute at this point --
I haven't done the work necessary to trace my roots back. However, my wife is
has done a good deal of geneological work on HER side of the family and
eventually plans to tackle the Monteiths. Maybe a couple of years down the road
we can be of help. In the meantime, I'll read with interest what others

Hi from
Australia,
My name is Jim Menteith, you've seen my son's home page. I also live in Brisbane (pronounced; Brizben in Ausi) As you can guess I've seen and like your home page.
My wife Sheila and I have just returned from a trip to Scotland and to the Lake of Menteith. Very little history of the area is available you have to wring it out of the locals and we still know nothing but for the Priory in the middle of the lake.
A little of myself, I'm 46, married with 4 children, Scott's the eldest. We own our home in Eagleby about 30 min drive south of Brisbane. My Father was born in Sydney Aust. His parents were from Perth Scotland. My Dad was born Hoyland-Menteith but changed his name before marrying my mother, removing the Hoyland. We haven't been able to find where the name Hoyland came from as yet but are working on that at the moment. Maybe you've come across it in your searches. If you have we'd love to know where it came in.
Dad's name was Sydney George Menteith, his parents were Ian Edin Hoyland-Menteith and Annie Elizabeth Saffron.
I don't know if this is any help for you but you may be able to help us.
bye for now,

I've sent my father a copy of your email add and the url for your homepage so you may get an email from him as he is interested in our famly history as well. If you like you can email him first on mutley@ecn.net.au
Someone else you like to email is a gentleman by the name of George Mantooth GMANTOOTH@postoffice.worldnet.att.net who also inquired after some information after our family history. His family changed their name from Menteith to Mantooth awhile ago, but he has done a lot of research from what I can gather.
I'm looking forward to browsing through your homepage and learning a bit more history about my family tree.

Malcolm,
I am a Monteith from Co. Tyrone too!! It's not a common name in NI but there are quite a few in co. Tyrone. I think the name originated in Scotland - there is a place called Port of Menteith, with a Lake of Menteith and Hills of Menteith nearby. Probably Scottish ancestors who came over at the time of the plantation of ulster in the sixteen hundreds (sorry my history isn't great).
There are quite a few Monteiths around Omagh - of whom most are related to me. There are also Monteiths in Castlederg - about 20 miles from Omagh, but still in Co. Tyrone - dont know if they are related - probably are if you go back far enough. There are currently some Monteiths in North County Antrim (myself included) who are all people born in Co. Tyrone - a brother and two cousins of mine.
Hope this is helpful - nice hearing from you,
Marina
