Hi..
I ran into your web site doing some family tree work of my own
for my branch of the Monteith family tree. What a surprise
to find a web site dedicated to the very thing I was working
on. Wow.
In any case, I look forward to your family tree pages being
completed. If you would like any information, and if you
have information to share, that would be wonderful.
My name is Johnmichael Monteith, and being the eldest of my
generation means I picked up the nick-name "Monty"
(which is how we have been assigning that honor). Most of
my relatives live in the Philadelphia area, although I currently
reside in Seattle.
Anyway, wanted to introduce myself, and say I look forward to
seeing more information on your great site!

Subject: Suggestion
Malcolm, may I make a suggestion? My Montieth/Monteith ancestor came from Ireland. Many others who have written to you have Monteith ancestors who immigrated from Scotland to the U.S. What do you think about creating a list of researchers divided into those two lists? I think it would help us communicate better with those who might be searching the same roots.
For example, I just attended a seminar on Irish Genealogy and got some information that could be helpful to the Irish Monteith's. If I can get a digital copy of it, maybe it could be posted on your website. What I have is a list of all Monteith householders in Ireland between 1848-1864 including first names, civil parish, and townland.
Thank you and Merry Christmas!

Malcolm, thank you for maintaining this site! When I get more time, I'd like to submit my Montieth family tree. What form do you want it in?
My gggrandfather was David Montieth (sometimes spelled the more popular way, sometimes not). He was born May 1, 1800 (or 1801) in Co. Tyrone, Ireland. I believe he immigrated to Philadelphia in 1818, married Margaret (name unk) of Chestnut Hill, PA and lived in that area until about 1845 when he moved his family to eastern Indiana near Richmond. He and his wife died in 1875 in Indianapolis. Children were: unknown male, Mary, Sarah, John, James, Clark, Emanuel (Thomas), Matthias (my ancestor), and Ann.
The offspring of Matthias all stayed in Indianapolis (where I was born); the families of Mary (Waltz), Sarah (Martin), and John moved to Nebraska before 1860. Later some of John's family went to Idaho. I have researched 3 generations of John's descendants. I would love to find some descendants of the Nebraska and Idaho branches!

I tried to send you an email on the Monteith homepage. I don't
think it happened, so here is the information again. It comes
from "The Lake of Menteith" by A.F. Hutchison,
published in 1894.......
The very earliest form in which the word occurs is Meneted, in
which shape it appears, according to Innes, in a manuscript that
dates in the latter part of the twelfth century. In a charter,
dated 1234, it appears as Mynteth and also Mynynteth, and as
Meneteth in 1240. From the twelfth to the end of the seventeenth
century, the word occurs in written documents in over thirty
different forms of spelling. A list of these will show the
variety in which the old scribes indulged. The date of the first
occurrence of each form is given. Many of them, of course, are
repeated with greater or less frequency.
Meneted (12th century), Manenthe and Manethe (1213), Mynynteth
and Mynteth (1234), Meneteth (1240), Menteth (1250), Meneth
(1253), Menetyef (1255), Menthet (1262), Menethe and Menetheht
(1286), Mentheht (1290), Menethet, Menetheth, and Menetht (1329),
Menetethe (1342), Menetoth (1354), Menetetht (1390), Montatht
(1392), Mentethe (1403), Mentetht (1410), Menteith (1421),
Monteth (1450), Menteithe (1473), Menteitht (1501), Mentheth
(1503), Mentehet (1508), Mentech (1512), Monteith (1513),
Mentethyt (1597), Munteth (1597), Monteathe (1622), Montide (in a
letter from Louis XIII. of France to the Earl of Menteith, 1634),
Montieth and Monteeth (Englishletters from the army of the
Parliament1653). The spelling Monteath does not appear
before 1724, when it was employed by Alexander Graham of Duchray
in his description of the Parish of Port.
Disregarding the early substitution of y, and the later and rare
substitution of u and o for the e of the first syllable, and
excluding the anomalous Manethe and Manenthewhich appear in
documents of Henry III. of England, and may therefore be set down
as errors of ignorance on the part of the English
scribean analysis of these forms, taking account both of
the spelling and the frequency of recurrence, seems to yield two,
of which the others are but varieties of spelling. These are
Meneteth and Menteth. The former is more frequent in the earlier
writings, and therefore may perhaps be
nearer the original word. Assuming that the
last portion of the word represents Theavich or
Teithwhether the district or the riverthe origin of
the first part may be found in one or other of the Gaelic words
monadh (hill), moine (moor or moss), or muin (back). The
hill-land, moorland, back-land of Taich would fitly enough
designate the region. The indefinite sound of the vowel in the
first syllable, indicated by the occasional change in spelling
from e to y, u, o, and even a, and still surviving in the popular
pronunciation, would also give countenance to any of the
derivations suggested. Perhaps, however, we shall not be far
wrong if we accept Monadh-Theavich as the most likely original of
the word Menteith.

David

Hi Malcolm,
I enjoy visiting your site, and I thought I'd contribute what I
know of my heritage for you and your reader's interest.
My name is James Howard Monteith and I live in Newport News, Va. I was born in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio. My father was James Gordon Monteith, and he was born in Elkhart, Indiana.
My grandfather's name was John Howard Monteith. I don't know where he was born, but I think the family traces back to Canada.
I hope that someone will develop a book that traces the Monteith migration to Canada and the U.S. I know there are many Monteith's that can trace their roots through North Carolina.
Hope this helps someone.

In Jan. or Feb. of 1997 you emailed me about creating a Monteith home page, asking me what I thought about it. I replied that I thought it was a great idea. At that time I was having a great deal of trouble with the internet service that was provided by our local library (West Bloomfield, MI) free. Like a lot of things that are free it didn't work out for me so I finally got with another access provider and it is working out much better. So, imagine my surprise when I heard from my grandson in Traverse City, MI. that indeed, you did create a home page and I think it is just great! You are to be commended for doing such a wonderful job. I love it! I have read all the letters in the Feedback section and found two that I had previously known about. Sure hope you can keep it going since I am sure it must be a lot of work. I have been researching the family name for about 20 years now and have amassed a great deal of information which includes a copy of a very, very rare volume, "the Red Book of Menteith", published in 1880 by William Fraser. You are probably familiar with it, but if you don't have a copy I would be happy to research it for any questions you might have. Please include me in your list of the Monteith surnames in the Feedback section of your home page. I will appreciate it very much.

I look forward to seeing what the UK section of your site will look like. I have some information on my branch of the family which was researched by my father Samuel Capie Monteith who lives in Glasgow .He has traced the line back to John Monteath a Burgess and Freeman of the City of Glasgow from 1746. He married Isobell Kirkwood . Two known children were William (1764-1851) and Alexander born 1776. I do not know when the spelling changed but his grandson was John Buchanan Monteith (1829-1903), my great-grandfather.

I have just found your web site and have phoned my husband's uncle in Glasgow, who is now in his 80s, to ask if I might tell you about the family tree he has compiled. His name is Samuel Capie Monteith, as was his father's. His grandfather was John Buchanan Monteith, and the family has a long connection with Hutcheson Grammar School in Glasgow. His family tree goes back, I think, to the 1740s. I have a copy but have not located it since a recent house move. If anybody would find this interesting, I might be prevailed upon to search for it.

Accidentally stumbled on your website and thought it was great! I am a Monteith and have been very interested in my family geneology for quite a while. Unfortunately I know very little about mine. My grandparents (Monteith's) and four of their five children and their families live in the North eastern Indiana area. My father (the fifth child) moved his four children and wife to northern Illinois. I know my grandfather was born in Ohio and there is a large branch of his family still living there. I seem to think that those came from Kentucky or Tennessee, but I could be wrong. I don't know specific names of ancestors, but I may be able to find some. Interestingly, did you know there is a small town in Ontario named Monteith? I met a man from there several years ago, but have gotten out of touch with him. I am interested as to how (or who) the town got its name, but have only found a few maps with the town even located on them.

Malcolm,
The Web Site is a great start and something that has been needed. I work in Greenland on a U.S. Air Force contract and live in Florida. My name is William Monteith, born January 14, 1939 in New York City to James Monteith Sr. and Agnes Robertson Spence Monteith. I was the third son and have a younger sister. According to my mother before she died my father was the fourth generation in the family to sire four children with the first three being boys and the fourth always the girl.
My father immigrated from Glasgow in the mid-1920's. He sent for my mother and married her three days after she got off the boat in 1928. My mother never immigrated and had entered the United States on her passport. This little detail had the family stuck on the Rainbow bridge in Niagara Falls in 1950 when we tried to enter Canada to see my dad's first cousins in Essex, Ontario. Mom's passport was out of date and the Canadian check point wouldn't let us enter. Dad promptly turned around and the U.S. check point did the same. The made us park the car on the bridge with the kids told to stay on the bridge while the U.S. authorities took mom and dad to the consulate to get the passport updated. Later that year mom became a U.S. citizen after being forced to study for it by the rest of the family.
My father was born in Glasgow November 13, 1896 and died in New Jersey, USA on January 17, 1958. He was the second of three sons. The oldest son in that family was John Monteith who served in the Royal Army during WWI and died shortly after the war from shrapnel wounds and the gassing he had received during the war. The youngest son was William Monteith. The girl was the youngest and at this time I'm not sure of the name, especially the full name. To my knowledge my father was the only one to immigrate. Uncle Willie died in Glasgow in his late sixties of a heart attack.
I know little about my paternal grandparents except that unlike my father they were over six feet tall and hailed from Stranraer. Granddad Monteith was a coal miner. My paternal grandmother was a Hunter.
The other children sired by my father were:
John Murray Monteith, born February 2, 1933 in New York City - died in East Orange, New Jersey USA of a stroke in January 1967. John died a bachelor.
Douglas Monteith born in 1936 in New York City and died in Glasgow Scotland at the age of nine months of an intestinal blockage.
Agnes Jean Monteith born March 18, 1940 in New York City. Now Agnes Spence Monteith Oliver. Agnes is a widow living in Ormond Beach, Florida. She has two daughters Edith and Susan and one son John.
I married the former Anna Mae Saunders of Forked River NJ. We have four children:
James Eugene Monteith, January 5, 1961. Jim and wife Debbie have no children and live in Jacksonville FL
Douglas John Monteith, June 20, 1962. Doug and wife Melinda are stationed with the US Navy at Pensacola FL. Doug and Melinda have one biological son, Daniel and have adopted two families of special needs children. The first is a family of three, one girl and two boys, Stacy, Jonathan, and Allen. The other is a brother and sister, David and Elizabeth.
Thomas Ian Monteith, April 21, 1967. The Reverend T. I. Monteith teaches and preaches in Colorado Springs CO. He and wife Tracy have four children. In order of their births they are: Michiel, Jonathan, Christopher, Kaitlyn.
That makes my son Tom the sixth generation in a row to sire three sons and then the daughter.
Kerri Anna Monteith, May 5, 1976. Now Kerri Anna Monteith Mancil, divorced and the mother of two daughters. Brianna Mae and Christina Marie.
Sorry this is so long. I'm retired from the US Air Force and work for Raytheon Support Service Company as a field engineer. I've been working in Greenland since 1986. When I talked about going into permanent retirement once, my son Tom told me "Dad you'll retire when we put you six feet under."
Keep up the good work on the Web Site.

Noticed your web-site while doing some historical research on Captain Robert Monteith ( c.1880's - 1952 ) originally from Dublin, Ireland later settling in New York & Chicago.
Robert Monteith's chief claim to fame was that he was with the British Army in South Africa during the Boer War, later a member of the Irish Volunteers ( 1913-1916), worked with Sir Roger Casement in recruiting an Irish Brigade from among Irish Prisoners of War in Germany 1915, accompanying Casement to Ireland for the 1916 revoloution aboard the U-20 submarine ( which the previous year had sunk the Lusitania ). On arrival in Ireland, Casement was captured by British forces and later executed for treason, but Robert escaped, managing to make his way back to the US.
In 1932, he published 'Casement's Last Adventure' which had become the definitive work on the Irish Brigade and the period.
Wife: name unknown.
Children: Florence, Josephine (Josie ) and Violet. Born c.
1900-10.
Brother: Jack Monteith - resident in NY.
Thats about all I know - perhaps his descendants may still be in the US - but at least you've got another colorful namesake in the family! You may have some connection or information on his later years - would appreciate any link or information.
Thanks,

Malcolm,
I found your Web Site a few moments ago, and was eagerly looking forward to looking into my family history. But unfortunately only the 'home page' would work. The rest of the URLs returned an error message.
So, please let me know how I might be able to see all the undoubtedly interesting information about the Monteiths.
I'm interested, because my mother's mother's mother was born a Monteith. She lived for many years at The Trean, Comrie, Crief, Scotland. Indeed she died there (or near there) on about 11 January 1959 as Teresa Mary Burdon-Cooper. Anyway, she was buried on 18 January 1959.
I remember my maternal grandmother telling me that her ancestors were 'true aristocrats of Scotland'. Indeed, it was at her insistence that I was educated (just precisely as she had been) in St Andrews, Scotland. I think Teresa's father served in India in the British Army, and died there. I have a lead about that - but I have to squeeze the info out of my aunt - who even went to India and has found the grave stone - just a few years ago.
I'm now very interested because I would like to call myself 'Scottish'. I wonder if I can do this? I'm 'British' which is a start. I was born in Germany, and both my parents say they're English (My father served with the RAF, and was a fighter pilot when I was born). My first journey to the UK was with my mother and we apparently landed first in Scotland. I was only about 3 weeks old. So - my first 'footing' was made in Scotland. I don't suppose you have any idea about all this - but anyway I'd still like to visit the inside of your web site!!
I have to admit to being a bit of a 'wild horse' - so maybe this comes from all those Scottish warriors.
Anyway - all the best - cousin,
Rebecca

My father, Charles Sr, has done a number of years of genealogy research. However, after a couple of heart attacks, and a stroke after surgery, his ability [ and desire ] has deminished. He traced my mother back to Issac Allerton on the Mayflower, but hasn't been able to go too far back on the Monteith side. My plans are to put his information into the computer, but am afraid it will take years to do so. My grandfather, Melvin Pearl Monteith was born 01 Oct 1878 in Sutton, Brome, Quebec. He was the son of John and Harriet Wing Monteith. John was born 08 Apr 1845 in Sutton, Que. He was the son of Walter and Eusebie Cochon Monteith. Subject: Monteith's
Hello Malcolm,
My name is Erin Monteith and I am beginning my search of the
Monteith family and descendants. I have always been
interested but just began researching as I am travelling to
Ireland and Scotland this fall. I have a 345 page
book on the history of the Monteith's of which I am proud to say
my name is somewhere within these pages. My Grandfather
George Monteith had 10 brothers and sisters if I remember
correctly, and his father was born in Ireland died in Toronto
1948. His oldest sister Sadie sailed from Glasgow April 19
1922 and arrived in Canada May 3rd. She married a
Snedden and their son became the executive director of Sick
Children's Hospital in Toronto where my mother (Castle Clyde) and
I worked. I am still researching and hope to find more through
the internet.

Hello,
My name is Tony Wallace and I have been researching my family
history and have recently discovered that my gggrandfather John
Wallace (b. 1806) and his brother Edward (b.1803) came to Ontario
from Castlederg around 1820 though John may not have made it here
until sometime in the 1830's. I found a land claim for Edward in
1821 and John's land claim isn't until 1834 though he may have
come over with his brother and worked his land until they had the
ability to work a second piece of land... who knows... They
settled in the Caledon Hills... not real close to Perth but I
have to wonder... the same town of origin and the same province
of Canada... interesting, at least.... Well, I haven't a clue how
to research records in Ireland and have yet to find any relevant
passenger lists. Perhaps you can help... if not, when I discover
more information perhaps I can help you... we may not be related
but perhaps our ancestors knew one another...
Happy Hunting,
Tony

Hi,
My Mantooth line was last in Texas, came from Cocke Cnty., TN. Please check my Genealogy pages, my Grandmother was Martha Hattie Mantooth, her brother was called "The Altoga Doctor" John Thomas Mantooth. Their parents were Woodson (Wood, Wootson) Mantooth & Luncida Lacy. Woodson's parents were John Mantooth & Elizabeth Martha (Betsy) Humbard. The dates/locations are in my genealogy pages. Please let me know what you find (or dont find). I have been unable to find any connection prior to John Mantooth/Betsy Humbard, any information on this line would be most helpful.
Happy hunting & keep in touch.
Thanks

Impressive effort ... nice to see someone taking the time and effort to document the family. Have you considered adding pictures of individuals?
I'm compiling my own as well as the Fitzsim(m)ons genealogy and am amazed at what I've found out, with many leads for further research coming off the internet.
Are you using a data base to catalogue all the relationships and miscellaneus info on individuals??
Keep in touch, and again congrats on a great web site which I know will become even better as more info is added.

Subject: Monteith's in Ontario, Canada
My name is Christine Monteith. I haven't been able to trace the Canadian Family history back any farther than 1852. In Mount Pleasant Cemetary is our family tombstone. Here is buried William S. Monteith and his wife Margaret Morrison who came from Carlisle, England in 1852. William S. was born in 1831 in Ben Lomond, Scotland. Margaret was born in 1832 in Gretna Green - from the death records at the cemetary. William and Margaret built a house in Scarboro, Ontario and called their street Benlomond Drive.
Further back in Scots history I have discovered a Mauritius, Earl of Menteth - my approximation of the time is between 1180 to 1200 - he was born. Mauritius had one daughter - called Daughter of Menteth - she married Walter Stewart who took the name Menteth and became the Earl of Menteth. Walter's father was the High Steward of Scotland. Four generations after this was a Mary Margaret Menteith Graham, Countess of Menteith who married the 1st Duke of Albany - Robert Stewart of Fife. Robert's brother was James 1 of Scotland. Mary Margaret is interred at Inchmahome Priory. After this I can find no trace of the Earls of Scotland for approximately 300 years.
Is is possible you could put this faction of the Monteith family on your web site.
Thanks,
Christine

Dear Malcolm Monteith:
I was thrilled to find your family page a few minutes ago on the
internet. I have been researching or trying to research Monteiths
for a number of years and have been up against a stone
wall. My great-grandfather was Hiram R. Monteith born c.
1819 in Ohio. I have no idea where in Ohio that he was born
or who his parents or siblings were.
The first information I have been able to find was when he bought
a hardware and saddlery business in Baton Rouge, LA in
1858. He was married very shortly after that to Melinda J.
Penny on April 27, 1858. They were the parents of three
children: Hattie DeFord (my grandmother), David Henry, and Scott
Penny Monteith. I will be happy to send dates and any other
information that I have if you are interested.
Thank you for you wonderful site.

Would like my name on your list of Monteith
researchers. I am Mickey Colombatto in Michigan and can be
reached at joemickey@juno.com.
My GGGM was born Rachel Montieth ca 1795 in Omagh, Tyrone Co., N.
Ireland. She married William Henderson b. ca 1786 in Omagh
in 1826 and they had 4 sons - Wm. Jr., John, Samuel and James all
born in Omagh and came to the U. S. in 1842 to Belmont Co.,
OH. Rachel's maiden name is always found with the
"i" before the "e" in any records. It
is said she was a school teacher in Ireland and I have her
spelling book she brought to this country with her. She had
a brother named George. Recently found a Monteith in Omagh
and I wrote
to him and hope to get an answer with the enclosed postal
coupons. Do you have any other Monteiths from Omagh?

Hi:
I am William Glenn Monteith Jr. and I live in Regina,
Saskatchewan, Canada. My father has the same name and he
was born and raised in Stratford, Ontario. His father's
name was James Charles Monteith, also of Stratford. I have
access to a History of the Monteiths that was compiled in the
1970's by a relative. It is extremely comprehensive and
took him 40-50 years to compile it. It is no longer in
print, but it would provide a wealth of information about the
Monteith's in Canada and the United States.
My compliments to you for taking this initiative. If I can be of any assistance, drop me a line.
Regards.

Hi Malcolm,
Great web site. Certainly interesting to find the Monteith name all over the map. Well here is another. I'm located in a small community of 4000 on Baffin Island, NWT, Canada. I've lived in arctic Canada for the past 28 years. My father was Ian Monteith of Cranley (just outside opf Lanark), Scotland. We are direct decendants of the Monteiths' of Glasgow Scotland (cotton merchants, Provost General), and before that James Monteith of Aberfoyle (until Rob Roy decided to do his thing). Have additional family tree information that I can share with you.

Hello, My name is Rick Mantooth, and I reside in Maryville, TN. Long before I was born, my father who is still living, changed our real name Monteith, to Mantooth? Why is not completely known, but I am sure that the common law had something to do with it. Anyway my father just turned 86. His father name was Forrest Monteith, who lived to be 79. My father's name is Alex Mantooth (Monteith). Hope maybe this will come in handy with your Geneolgy project.

Malcolm - I
discovered your Monteith family homepage and was delighted to
learn more about the clan. I'm a Monteith by marriage and have
done research on my husband and sons' lineage for several years.
They are direct descendants of Thomas Monteith, (referred to as
The Merchant of Glasgow in some publications) who immigrated to
Virginia in 1714. That's as far as I've gotten!
Here is the address for another Monteith/Menteith website.
Michael Mantooth has been researching the Monteith line also and
was kind enough to copy the ENTIRE Red Book Of Menteith for other
researchers.
