Subject: Monteith's in Manitoba, Canada
I recently came across an unknown 1st cousin (David Michael
Parker) after I had posted some information on your web site. We
have been in contact and are exchanging various bits of
information. The question has come up about a family member
called Isabella Gould who moved to Manitoba from in about the mid
1850s after her husband died. A town
called Isabella was named after her. When I click on the map of
Canada it states that the Manitoba section is under construction.
Can you tell me if that is because there is no information or is
it because it is being collected still? I am going to look
into it but do not want to waste your time if you have
information already.

I am a decendent of the Monteith's - Kathleen Isobel Thistle and Wm Nelson Jeffrey were my grandparents - there are errors in their dates of death - Wm was in '51 and Kathleen in '75. I'm very curious - did Jane Buchanan ever emmigrate? or did just John and Margaret? any info on the ship and or where they landed and eventually settled? I'm writing a fairly loose account of the history of my 4 family branches for my kids - I'm not a writer! but am trying to write a female perspective with real historical events and actions around the lives of our ancestors and the hardships they endured on coming here. I'm trying to keep the timelines right so if you know the answers to the above, its greatly appreciated. Kate Montgomery, Mississauga

Hello,
As a result of the new familysearch.org site, I have an update on
our best guess to my branch of the Monteith's to Scotland.
I am attaching the results of my research that indicates direct
decent from John Monteith & Agnes Taylor of Stirling,
Scotland via John (1764) and Jean (1768) [cousins?]. I am
sure that I have cousins stemming from John
(4/12/1790) and John Watson (6/29/1818) but have not found
them.
The family story is that three Monteith brothers came to
America prior to the revolution, but I have found no siblings of
John (1764). Use my data to update that from my cousin
Nancy Monteith Talley. I hope this info smokes out some of
our relatives.
Thanks,

Subject: Monteith's of New Zealand
Dear Malcolm, Joseph Monteith and his
brother Robert Monteith sailed to New Zealand on a ship called
the Dallam Tower from Plymouth, England arriving Wellington, New
Zealand on the 17th of March 1875. They were farm labourers who
assisted immigrants and paid 29 pounds for their voyage. Both
originally coming from County Meath, Ireland, Joseph and Robert's
father according to family legend was bailiff or estate agent to
the Earl Of Darnley. A search of Irish peerage indicates
the likely Earl as the 5th Earl (Edward Bligh) before his
elevation to the peerage Bligh, had been M.P. for Canterbury from
1818 until 1830.
After their arrival in Wellington NZ, Joseph found work at
Lethenty Station as a farm worker. He worked for John
Glenny Wilson, later Sir John Wilson.
What happened to Robert we do not know
although it is said that he left New Zealand for Australia.
Here is some of the family tree in New
Zealand.
Joseph Monteith married Margaret Ross
who was born in Victoria, Australia. By 1899 there were five
children. Here is the line from which our part of the
family came:
James Hubert Monteith born 1881 was my Great Grand-father. He
married Eleanor Emily Hunt and had 2 sons and 4 daughters.
My grandfather was Archibald Francis Monteith (deceased).
He married Myra Louise Wallis (deceased). His youngest son
Spencer John Monteith is my father. He married Lee-Anne Francis
Edwards and had 2 children of which Ben is the oldest and Trevor
(me) the youngest.
Will some of this info be on your web site.

I do not know much of my mother's family and that's why I was intrigued into finding out more about her name. The only thing that I did know about them is that they were wealthy people. My grandfather died when my mother was 8 yrs old so I don't think my mom knows much about her heritage either. I just by chance typed Monteith in while playing with one
of the search
engines and your web site happened to come up. Needless to
say I was quite
surprised as well as quite pleased.
My maiden name was Monteith and happen to have a copy of the
Monteith coat
of arms given to my by my Aunt Blanche after one of her several
trips back
to Scotland. She also had a copy of our genealogy that my Mother
seems to
have misplaced over the years.
Unfortunately all I know of my ancestry is that my Father, Wayne
Leroy
Monteith (the surviving twin born to James and Louis Monteith in
Lakota,
North Dakota in 1916) was the youngest of the family. Dad's
sister Blanche
was the oldest of his siblings with his brothers - Clifford,
Garner, and
Arnold - falling between (I believe in that order). My Father
passed away
in 1976 at the age of 60.
My parents were married in 1921 in Lakota, ND and had four
children...Gary
in 1942, Mary Lou in 1944, Richard in 1951 and Joy (myself), in
1954.
My Aunt and Uncle's have also passed away and I have had no luck
in finding
any further information.
Please, if there is any information you can share with me I would
greatly
appreciate it.
Respectfully,
Joy.

I have just stumbled upon the web page and I have book
marked it. Lots of
great emails and I will spend much more time here in future.
My name is Colin James Monteith and I live in Toronto, Canada
where I have been since 1981 with my wife Diana. We have a
daughter named Jamie who is almost 13 years old.
I was born in Glasgow and was raised for the first few
years at Dunoon, an
area where most of my father's side of the family came from. Due
to the split
of my mother and father at a very early age, I never got know my
grandfather who was a minister of the Church of Scotland there.
One of these days I hope to fill in some blanks or perhaps its
gaping holes.
I have minimal contact with my father (Jim) who lives in
the south of England
now but he did tell me that an ancestor moved to Canada many
years ago and
started a village in Manitoba named after his wife Isabella.
Subsequent to
that some members of the family moved to California and were
involved in film business under the name of Crawford. In fact my
father claimed that one of them was Joan Crawford but I have zero
information to support any of that and while interesting, its no
more important than the other gaps.
Keep up the great work with the site.

Dear Malcolm,
Having just found your site, it's exciting that you've made such
a significant effort to pull information together about our
family. Ever since I was a child, I have been interested in
the infrequent occurrence of the name (that must mean we're
special!), and I had a grandmother who kept family interest alive
with her interesting tales of family folklore and travels.
My entire family now is very interested in researching the
name/family, and my father, Donald A. Monteith (dmonteit@freeway.net),
who currently lives in Charlevoix, Michigan, has begun a
quite an extensive family history of our branch of the
family.
I am currently married to an Englishman and living in
England, where I continue the search for "our roots" a
bit closer to our original "home". I've visited
the Port of Menteith, a charming hamlet in Perthshire, Scotland,
and Doune Castle, home of the Earls of Menteith. In my
spare time, I try to uncover as much information as I can.
I notice that your Monteith page for the United States appears to
contain only Monteiths in Iowa, so I think you'll be happy to add
quite a healthy contingent from Michigan, Pennsylvania and many
other states that our branch is currently living in. Our
family, originally landed in the "New World" in Nova
Scotia, so there apparently is quite an immigration trail through
Canada to the US.
Good Luck in your continued efforts, and we'll definitely keep in
touch...

Hello there-Out of sheer curiosity I was wondering if anyone has ever heard of Lt. Jimmie W. Montieth Jr. of Richmond Virginia. Jimmie was awarded the Medal of Honor on Omaha Beach during the Normandy invasion in 1944. I read his medal citation on the internet and he no doubt was a true American hero. He was killed while trying to save others and is buried at the American Cemetery overlooking Omaha Beach in France. I thought someone in the Monteith family might find the following information interesting. As Jimmie's mother was anguishing on whether to bring her son home or leave him buried in France she wrote the following letter to the US Government. "Gentleman, this has been such a terrible decision to make-hence the delay. We hope he may be undisturbed among the men he so loved and gave his life trying to save. My beloved son. Most sincerely his mother, Caroline Montieth. Caroline MONTEITH'S husband Jimmie Sr. died in 1942 in Richmond Virginia-according to the file. She wrote another letter to the quartermaster General stating the following. "There is no satisfactory decision. It is unthinkable to move him and equally unbearable to leave him. So we hope that he may be undisturbed. Sincerely, Caroline Montieth. I saw Jimmie Monteiths grave in France a number of years ago and have always wondered who this brave young man was. I accessed the letter from his mother through the Department of the Army burial records. I must say I was just as moved by his mothers words as I was reading Lt. Monteith's Medal of Honor citation. I thought your family, whether your related or not might find this kind of interesting.
Sincerely,

Dear Malcolm,
My name is Anne Zeigler and I live in Galena, Ohio (suburb of Columbus). We just recently discovered your website and were excited to share it with my stepfather, Gordon Monteith, and my uncles, Rolfe and Neville Monteith, who were visiting us at a family gathering this past weekend. I believe you are third cousins! They are the sons of H. M. Monteith whose father was J. C. Monteith. His father was Andrew Monteith, brother of James Monteith and they were both sons of John Monteith. We would like to add family information regarding the descendents of J.C. Monteith. Gordon has two volumes of a book entitled "A History of the Monteiths" by J. Ernest Monteith. If you do not have a copy, we would be happy to share!
Do you have any information regarding relatives in Castlederg, Northern Ireland and the relationship between the Monteith's of Northern Ireland and the Monteith's of Perth County? Uncle Rolfe lives in London, England and he said several years ago he visited with a vicar in Castlederg who took him to several Monteith homes; however, no one he met seemed interested in talking.
Also, we have a copy of family records for The Preble County, Ohio Line of Monteith Family given to Gordon in 1980 by Jess Monteith of Springfield, Ohio. This record shows his earliest know ancestor as "Robin" Robert Monteith, born about 1800 probably in the Castlederg area, with nine children born to the marriage some of whom emigrated to Preble County, OH, Cass and Carroll Counties, IN, Philadelphia, PA, and Australia. He was looking for a connection with other Monteith's from Castlederg. We plan to try and locate Jess Monteith to see what additional information he may have. I'd like to mail you a copy of the Preble County record since this information could be used to update the page for the Monteith's of The United States. Do you suppose there is any relationship between "Robbie" Robert Monteith and Andrew Monteith both apparently from the Castlederg area?
Finally, we heard there have been Monteith family reunions in Ontario in the past. Do you know if any future such events are planned? Thank you so much for all of your efforts and for creating such a fabulous website.
Look forward to hearing from you -- Anne

Henry Monteith, 1765 to 1848, of Carstairs House, Lanark,
Scotland, was our most remarkable man in history that we know of.
His father was James Monteith of Anderston, Glasgow. His father
was Henry Monteith of Aberfoyle and later of Glasgow. His

Do you think we've all come from the same gene ? It would be nice

Have just found your web site and found it interesting. I have some info I don't know if we are in the same family or not we don't have a lot of information from when the brother came to New Zealand in 1875. All I have is Robert and Joseph Monteith arrived in New Zealand as assisted immigrants at Wellington NZ from Plymouth England on the 17th March, 1875 on the ship Dallam Tower. The ship's records say
- Monteith Rob 24
from county of Meath, Ireland Farm labour
- Monteith Joseph 22 from County of Meath Farm labour
It is said in the family that Rob went to Australia. Joseph may have been 23 by the time they reached New Zealand.
Hope this may be helpful to you or me,

I am seeking any information possible on my birth family. I
have just been able to confirm my birth family name is
"Mantooth". I believe my birth mother's name was
Lucille, but do not know for sure yet. Soon though.
My birth parents were "married for a short time".
I was born at St. Luke's Hospital in Spokane, Washington on
12/22/49 to a young couple. They were both 19 years old,
making them born in 1930. He was "born in another
state" and was listed as "a service station
operator". She stayed at the Frances Hulin Maternity Home in
Spokane, WA until my birth. I was placed for adoption with
William E. and Lillian E. Boze.
Lillian later remarried Dwight R. Ellenwood and Dwight
readopted me. I was two weeks premature and weighted 6 lbs.

He remarried and had children. His father was John Scalley Monteith born 4/30/1877 died in Philadelphia. 4/30/1955. His father was James Gormerly Monteith born in 1852 apparently in Philadelphia there 7/26/1903. Apparently his father was John and mother was Annie But this is where my tree stops. Have not found anything on John and Annie except that possibly they had a daughter Matilda A. Toffling who died in Philadelphia. 7/19/1901. It would appear that John was born about 1827.

Dear Malcolm
I came across your site quite by accident and was fascinated by
it. My father and I also have a very keen interest in
genealogy, and have been actively trying to trace our Scottish
roots for a couple of years. I live in Johannesburg South
Africa and the Monteiths in our direct family here total 11, but
we are aware of others (or at least 1 other family). My father
has our family tree on pc which goes back to about the 1600's -
which included a lot of looking through graveyards and churches
in both Scotland and Ireland. If you would like a copy of
what we have so far we would more than happy to mail you what
we've got - you may find various connections. Anyway well done on your site and keep it
up - I will definitely be coming back to it.
Please could you add my e-mail address to your list under
South Africa and I will get the rest of the family to visit the
site soon.

So I can only ask that you be patient with me. My aunt has a lot of information of our family from Scotland. I am now just getting her to let me have some of the maps and documents that she has. She is slowly letting me review them. I can tell you that she married a Macafee that is also from Scotland. I just thought that I would get in here and see if I can find were I fit in. Just a foot note I also found another Geoffrey Monteith in Columbus Georgia. My fathers name was George and my mother was Joan Remick. My father had a stepfather and did not know his real father. So as it seems to be a curse of the Monteith name that each of us has a missing link. Lets hope we can all someday find the link we search for. For my only fear is that I am the last male Monteith here...

Dear cousins,
On the 18th of July, 1594, my ancestor
"Jehan de Monteth" signed in Paris a contract of
marriage with Suzanne Hotman. Her father François was a friend
of Calvin and died in Geneva (his story is found in any
dictionary).
The contract starts as follows:
1. "Furent presens en leurs personnes Jehan de Monteth
escuier
Were present in their persons John Monteth esquire
2. sr dargentenay natif en escosse en la province de Sterlincher
seignor of Argentenay born in Scotland in the Province of

4. en ceste ville de paris loge en la maison du chapeau Rouge
in this city of Paris living in the house of the red hat
5. paroisse de St Jehan en greve Assiste de Jehan de gourdon
parish of St. Jean en Grève assisted by John Gordon
6. Gentilhomme de la chambre du Roy sr de boullaffery
Gentleman of the bedchamber of the King seigneur of
Boullay-Thierry
7. son cousin remué de germain a cause de leurs grandes mères
filles du
comte de montrosse en escosse..."
his second degree cousin (a first degree cousin is a "cousin
germain", a "cousin remué de germain", in old
French, is one (or more?) generation after) because of their
grand mothers daughters of the earl of Montrose in Scotland...
The real link between the earl of Montrose (the 1st and\or the
2nd) and my John Monteith has never been found after decades of
research by me and others. His parents were not found
either. When I was a McGill University post-graduate
student, I had access to many documents concerning Scottish
families and I could never found the link. I found that this John
Gordon, a historic character in the Dictionary of National
Biographies, had a grand-mother who was not the daughter, but the
niece, of the 1st Earl of Montrose.
Nonetheless, I found that there was in Scotland a John Menteith,
4th son of Sir William Menteith of Kerse, whose grand-mother is
the niece of the 1st Earl of Montrose. He is the only John
Menteith found in this situation. I cannot prove he is the same,
while my own Jehan de Monteth was still in life in 1601 in
France, and his wife remarried about 1605 (maybe because he had
disappeared from France), while the 4th son of Sir William M. of
K. never married in Scotland and died about 1639 (if I remember
well) and his heir was his brother Lewis. I read the
genealogy at Lyon Office, as microfilmed by the Mormons, without
finding anything.
Any help or hints will be highly appreciated, as this Jehan de
Monteth has thousands of descendants in North America, as one
grand son and a great grand daughter settled in Canada in the
XVII century.
Yours,
Yves Gagne, darotob@cam.org

John Monteith and his Kansas City High School card with
signature, Toronto Canada with "Aunt Ida and Aunt
Esther", Great-Grandfather Monteith (John Nelson Monteith)
taken in Peoria Illinois in 1906. There are also photos of
tombstones in Stratford Ontario Canada with names that are listed
on your web page: Elizabeth Gibson, James Monteith and wife
Fanny Nelson, William Monteith and John Monteith.
This photo album was from a yard sale that a friend had many

Please let me know if this item belongs in your family--

Thanks so much for providing
this information. I am very much aware of the Whipples from
Illinois. Ida, Esther and John were children of James H.
Monteith who was a brother of my grandfather. He had moved
to Illinois as a young man.
You made reference to Janice, the original recipient of the
scrapbook. Ida had a niece Janice C. Monteith, a daughter of her
brother John, who married a John Wagy.
As a child, I remember visiting our relatives on numerous
occasions when they would come to Ontario or we would go to
Illinois. I have very fond memories of these visits and would be
delighted if you would send the scrapbook to me.
Although many of the people listed in Ida's scrapbook are now
deceased, I do keep in contact with their descendants and will be
dropping in on them next summer when I am on my way to Milwaukee,
WI. I will return the album to them at that time if they so wish.
Once again, thanks so much for taking the time to contact me.

Subject: Marie Monteith
I am writing on behalf of my wife, Ann Sheppard. She was born April 20, 1943 at North Chicago Hospital to a Marie Monteith and placed almost immediately for adoption from the Cradle Society in Evanston, Illinois.
We have been down this road several times searching for her family links with only limited success, including a trip to Chicago where we met with the staff of the Cradle Society, researched through state records, etc.
We believe her birth mother, Marie Monteith, was in her early thirties at the time of Ann's birth. We know that Marie already had a child, we think in the 5-7 year old range, but we don't know whether male/female.
Frankly, there is probably more important information we don't know. For instance, we don't know if Monteith is Marie's maiden or married name. We don't know why Ann was given up for adoption. We believe Marie was either American or Canadian, simply because there is no mention of her being of a foreign extraction. We know that Marie was rather short and a little plump. We know there was a Major Monteith attached to a local defense plant in the Chicago area at the same time as my wife's birth. Any connection? Who knows?
North Chicago Hospital, and it's records of the time also, no longer exist. I've stood on the spot where it was and it is now a high rise office building of some sort. The defense plant has long since disappeared, of course. We have hired private investigators, logged onto internet find-anyone-anywhere services, etc., all to no avail. We've even spoken to a few Monteiths.
I can't appreciate the empty spot the not knowing leaves in my wife's heart. I know the history of both sides of my family. She knows only that somewhere she should have a brother or sister, that a lady named Monteith cared enough for her welfare to ensure adoption and that, conceivably, that lady may still be alive today. She knows that she has health problems that may be genetic and that could very easily effect her own children. Ann needs to know for those and other reasons I can only try to understand and appreciate, who her family is and where she came from.
Judging from your web pages, it appears the Monteith family has an extensive family research arm covering the entire family worldwide. I don't know if you can be of assistance, but, please, if you can shed any light which may aid us in finding my wife's mother or sibling(s), let us know as soon as possible.
Hopefully,
Don Sheppard

William Monteith who married a Mary(last name unknown) and came
to Charleston, SC from Scotland. I have not been able to go back
any further. The family says that our Monteiths
are from around Glasgow, Scotland but I dont have any
proof, etc. William Monteith was born in Sept. 1774 and
died in Columbia on Feb. 8, 1821.He was a merchant. He had
two sons: Galloway Monteith and Ainsley Hall Monteith. They say
that his best friend was Ainsley Hall from Scotland and that he
was instrumental in getting William Monteith to come to South

My name is Richard Alan Monteith, a descendant of a Monteith who was born in Armagh, Ireland, in the 1820's. I am delighted to find a Monteith interested in genealogy as I am also very interested in finding out more about my ancestors in Ireland and Scotland. I am at work now and haven't any of my records with me, but will e-mail you again soon to exchange information. I am sure you have more info than I, as I am only a beginner, but glad to meet you.
Sincerely,
r.a.m.

Hi all,
Great to find a web site devoted to the "Monteiths. My name is Graham Monteith and I live in Paisley,Scotland - not too far from the ancestral home of the Monteith's. My father has been researching our family tree, managing to get it back to the early 1700's - we are not, it would seem, one of the far flung branches of the family with our ancestors apparently coming from the area to the East of Loch Lomond. My e-mail address is monteith@net.ntl.com and my fathers is william.monteith@net.ntl.com. Please add us both to your list of links.

I am writing to advise you of my EMail address in Queensland, Australia. I am interested in tracing my family background as I never knew my grandparents and my father is now deceased. He and my mother seperated when I was 5 yrs old and when I finally located him some 21 years later he had suffered a stroke and was unable to communicate properly. If you know anyone in Australia who may be able to assist me can you have them contact me. My grandparents were Iain and Anne Monteith although when I was surfing the pages I found a reference to Iain Menteith in Australia. There was no other information. I do know however that he was a solicitor and emigrated from Wales in the 1930's. My EMail address is monty@widebay.net.au Please add me to your home page as a contact in Australia. If you have ICQ on your computer I can be contacted on number 29405808 if you wish to chat. Thank you for your excellent work so far. Please keep it going as, like you, I am very interested in our heritage and history.

Subject: NEW Henderson/ MONTIETH data
Date: Sun, 31 Jan 1999 14:39:11 EST
You have been a person who I was in contact in the past about my Montieth ancestor. I just recently found some new interesting data which I am sharing with you just in case it gives you something that may show a relationshp.
Recently, I found that William Rannie Henderson was
born April 28, 1786 in Duddington, Midlothian,
SCOTLAND!!!!! He was the son of Thomas Henderson and Janet
Rannie. A marriage was found for him on October 12, 1826 in
St. Cuthbert's Parish (Presbyterian) church in Edinburgh,
Midlothian, Scotland to RACHEL MONTIETH. So far, I
have not found anything about Rachel's parents, unfortunately,
but am still trying. I would assume she was born probably
in the same area and am trying to find a researcher in Scotland
to do some looking for me. I did find Rachel';s death here
in this country on March 1880 in Noble Co., OH death records in
Probate Court. It said she was 85 years of age and died on
"old age" and lived in Center Twp. This would mean she
was born ca 1795, if I can subtract correctly.
The birth of their first child, William H. Henderson was found on
May 1, 1827 in Omagh Tyrone Co., Ireland - so -----------William
Rannie and Rachel
Henderson moved quicly after their marriage. This couple
came to the U.S. with their 4 sons (James, Wm. Jr, Samuel
and John) in 1842 and lived in Belmont County, OH. Have
found lots on the Henderson souls but NOTHING on any
Montieth/Monteith people. My address on JUNO is the one I
use and check most often.
Thanks for any leads,
Mickey in Farmington Hills, MI

Malcolm,
I've been very impressed with your website and have already
passed the URL on to my brothers. First, one quick
suggestion: that is a very nice service to find all of the
Monteith's in the obituary search. Could you also include
the list of those of us who spell the name
"Montieth"?
As to County Tyrone research. I don't have as much as I'd
like, but I do have two lists of about 70-80 Monteith's from
"Griffith's Valuation Householder's Index". It
shows first name, townland, and civil parish name within Co.
Tyrone for all variations of the Monteith spelling. The
time period is 1848-1864. Unfortunately, the list I have
now is on paper, but perhaps I could get it electronically.
I also have a list of the number of Monteiths in Church of
Ireland registers and their location and availability. In
which barony or civil parish is Castlederg?
I only know that my relative (David) arrived in Philadelphia
about 1818 and that his gravestone says he was born in Co. Tyrone
in 1801. I don't know where in that county and the records
are not terrific in the very early 1800s, so it's possible I will
never find out more.
I also have the name of an Irish genealogist who impressed me
with her knowledge, etc -- Nora Hickey. She would do
research for a fee either in her library in Cork or in
Dublin. I'm planning to email her to ask a few follow-up
questions from the one-day seminar I attended in December.
Keep up the great work!!!! I have great hopes
that someone will read my email message you have now posted and
find some kind of a match!!!

Hello Malcolm,
My name is Darryl Monteith & I live in Gisborne which is on the East Coast of the North Island of New Zealand., which compared to you is at the end of the world ! My partner's name is Kerry Donovan, and we have two daughters - Maia Donovan-Monteith (2) and Jasmine Donovan-Monteith (7 months). I am 33 years old and work as the Manager of a radio station called Gisborne's 2ZG. I'm also a bit of a muso & play guitar & sing for a band called Big Chill as well as doing regular solo work.
My father's name is Howard Monteith, his father was Archie (now deceased). Howard live's in Rotorua & I have a full sister called Fiona in Hamilton & two half sisters from Dad's second marriage - Sally & Phillipa who live in Rotorua.
I've actually written & recorded a song about the two Monteith brothers who came out from Ireland in the early 1800's. It's called "The Pioneers" & if you want I can send you a copy on CD.
"Monteith's" is also a popular brand of beer here in New Zealand. I like to brag that they named it after me, but I think it was actually the "other" brother who wound up on the West Coast of the South Island & obviously did alright for himself.
I'm not on-line as yet but one of my staff is, so don't hesitate to contact me at this address.
My home address is:
27 Rawiri Street, Gisborne.
Cheers.

Subject: Incredible connection
Dear Malcolm:
For over twenty years I have been trying to establish a Scottish
connection to our Monteith line. I have hired professional
genealogists in Scotland who didn't come cheap, but all to no
avail. Then one evening I saw James Monteith's letter to
you and I nearly fell off my chair! He is James Monteith of
Dundee, Scotland and his letter was the second one in your
feedback column. The line that he listed in his letter was
exactly the same as those I have in my line. The same names, same
birth dates, same marriage dates and spouses and the same death
dates. It was an incredible discovery and I thank you for
starting your Monteith home page for if you had not done so it
never would have happened. James and I have, in the
meantime, corresponded and we beleive we are of the same lineage.
At least we are calling each other cousin! If this isn't a plug
for your home page, I don't know what could be.
Many thanks.
Allan Monteith in W. Bloomfield, Michigan.

Malcolm,
The Lake of Menteith, A M Hutchison, published Stirling 1899 is an invaluable source for the early Earls of Menteith/Monteith and of local history and information of interest to Monteiths.

Hi Malcolm!
What a great site! I just wanted to add to the message from
William Glenn Monteith about the existence of a Monteith family
history by J.E. Monteith. It is quite extensive and I have
a copy of it should you like to see it. (I live in Whitby,
Ontario.) One of your correspondents mentioned the family
reunion that was held in south western Ontario. A great
number of Monteith's were amassed each summer for the reunion
until it was learned that they were not in fact related.
J.E. Monteith's research showed that the Perth County Monteith's
(my family) were not related to any other Monteith family in
Canada. I would be interested to learn if this can be
refuted by anyone else's research.
I have some relatives who have quite a bit of family history if you're interested.
Keep up the great work.
Linda Monteith
