Mr. Monteith,
My name is Karen Monteith-Jones. I am looking for family history on the Monteith's and I am hoping you can help me in some way.
I have no connection to the Monteith side of my family. I know very little about my dad or his family. I will provide you with some of the information that I know and perhaps you can fill in some blanks for me or direct me somewhere else.
Here is what little I know;
My father's name is Alasdair Paris Monteith (Monty). Born approximately 1937 I believe in St. Thomas. His father's name is Thomas and his mother's is Gwendolyn. I have no knowledge of any middle names nor of her maiden name. He has one brother named Ian Monteith. I am not sure of his wife's name but I know he has two adopted children, names unknown to me. I was told that his line of genealogy came from Scotland but this may or may not be true.
I don't know whether or not you can help me with this in some way but I would sincerely appreciate any direction that you can give.
Thank you for your time!
Karen Monteith-Jones

Subject: Glasgow Monteiths
Date: Tue, 26 Apr 2005 00:23:34 +1000
Hello,
I've just been reading this fascinating site and would like to post a
message about my Monteith connection. I'm Australian and my mother's
dad's family were Campbells from Glasgow. My g-g-g-grandmother was
Hannah Monteith, born 1818 at St Ninian's, Stirlingshire. Her parents
were John Monteith and Mary Ann Shepphard. Hannah married Alexander
Campbell in 1839 and lived until 1911. Hannah's brother was Edward,
born 1820, died 1880. He married Ann Stevenson. I have quite a bit of
info on his children, including Hugh who moved to Lancashire, England
and had a large family, and Marion, who married Hugh McLundie and
moved to the USA. I haven't confirmed it yet but I believe that Elsie
Elizabeth McLundie "Peggy" Bolton is a grandchild of Marion. I found a
little info about her online at
http://www.sec.state.la.us/museums/osc/month/day-aug.htm
I've been going nuts trying to find John Monteith's death at
Scotland's People, I know he passed away between 1866 and 1880.
I'm looking for anyone who knows of a John Monteith married Margaret
Wright in 1827, this could be his 2nd marriage. Or, of course, anyone
who knows of my branch. Although Hannah was born at St Ninian's, all
other references point to the family being in Glasgow.
Hannah's son John, emigrated to Australia with his wife and 2 sons,
Alex and John. I was interested to note the politicians on your site
as both my grandfather and his father were Labor pollies in NSW in the
Liquor trades union.
Many thanks for all your work!

Hello
there,
Are
you still compiling names for this website of the Monteith’s?
My great-grandmother was a Monteith, but I don’t know her first name
(it may have been Mary). She
married a man whose last name was Dunbar and they had four children who were
born in Castlederg. He (Dunbar) was
a stone-mason. My grandmother was
one of their children – born in 1899 and named Margaret Ann Dunbar.
I
am trying to research this area of our family tree, so if you could give me any
assistance, it would be appreciated. I
am planning to come over to the Castlederg area in the fall of this year (I live
in Canada), so would like a few leads to follow up on!

I have a book that was made call the History of the Monteiths and data dates
to 1679 copyright 1984. Written by J Ernest Monteith now deceased.
Our family purchased it from him, he had help compiling this book from many
people one being my Uncle John Monteith. Ernest says that this volume has
been over a half century in the making. Apparently the Monteiths, or
Mentieths were kicked out of Scotland to Ireland The name Monteith was not
always spelled as we spell it today. In the early entries in the Cappagh
Church registry which goes back to 1756, the name was usally spelled Menteith
and once it was found Monteath. The spelling Menteith was found as early
as 1234. Anyway my mother was a Monteith and came from Coatbridge and
went to school there, also her school still stands today. My mother had 10
brothers and sisters and actually had an Anut Jane Mathie who died at the age of
108 in Scotland and she was well known for attending the dog races. It
sure is an eclectic family and I am going to Scotland to visit the Inchmahone
Priory where the Earl of Menteith lies with his wife. I hope this gets to
you and you find this a little interesting, it goes on and on.
Thanks
