John P. Kay and Margaret Monteith had eight children altogether but four died...three at ages 6 and 7 and one at age 17.  It was this John Paterson KAY, M.D. born in 1839 in Kilbarchan, Scotland who volunteered in the American Civil War.  John P. Kay was a physician and served the US Union Army as a contract surgeon at Point of Rocks (Virginia) military hospital in the spring of 1865.  Margaret and John first lived in Huron County and then in Bruce County.  John P. and the four children are buried there in the McIntosh Cemetery on the Huron/Bruce Counties border.  There is a headstone standing today with their inscriptions on it. Margaret is buried in the Mount Hope Cemetery in Lapeer, Lapeer County, Michigan.  She followed her sons to Michigan after the death of her husband John P.'s and the death of her 17 year old daughter. John P. died at age 44. This left Margaret with the three sons you have listed and her daughter Euphemia, youngest.  These four children lived to adulthood.
