Mrs. Samuel Monteith - Sudden was the stroke that last evening summoned Mrs. Samuel Monteith to a better world. She resided in the Gore of Downie with her son, Nelson Monteith, Reeve of Downie, and was subject to slight trouble of the heart, but her death was notwithstanding entirely unexpected. She was apparently in a normal state of health, except for feeling a trifle indisposed, and on retiring to bed about 10 p.m. just as she was in the act of lying down, she gave a few gasps and expired. She was attended by her daughter, Mrs. (Dr.) W. N. Robertson, and her son Nelson had only time to hurry into the room at his sister’s call to see their mother expire. The shock to the family was a terrible one, and the most tender sympathy is expressed on the part of their many friends.  The deceased lady’s maiden name was Annie Jane Nelson, and she was a native of Donegal, Ireland, coming to this country in 1836 with her father the late Matthew Nelson, and settling in the Gore of Downie.  As a child she attended the first public school (in North Easthope) established in Perth county, taught by the late Mr. Linton.  She lost her husband in June , 1890, and is survived by her sister, Mrs. Pinch of Stratford, and three daughters and one son - Elizabeth, wife of John C. Monteith, Mayor of Stratford; Fanny, wife of Wm. Jeffrey, of Jeffrey Bros.; Jennie, wife of Dr. W. N. Robertson; and Nelson, Reeve of Downie township.  She was a member of St. James church and a lady of sterling qualities, and with her husband won a title to the grateful memory of a wide circle of relatives and friends. The funeral has been set for 2:30 tomorrow afternoon.
