I would like to welcome you to the
Monteith Family Web Site. My name is Malcolm Monteith and I live
in Arva, Ontario, Canada (near London). Ever since I was a student in High
School, I have had a keen interest in genealogy and was fortunate
to have had the opportunity to visit and interview many of the
older members of my family during the 1950's when they were still
alive. I recorded the information which I received back then, and
will be publishing it on the world wide web during the months
ahead.
I believe that it must be the Celtic background of the Monteith
clan which motivates our interest in genealogy, for I have
regularly found Monteith's keen to discuss such matters. My
ancestors arrived in Canada from Northern Ireland in 1833. Those
early settlers stressed the value of family ties and many of the
early traditions such as that of holding an annual family reunion
have lasted right up to the present.
Until recently, it was very difficult to know about or reach
those other branches of the Monteith family tree to see how the
pieces of this puzzle fit together. In late December 1997, I was
searching for an E-Mail address and I accidentally came upon
Marina Monteith, a member of the teaching staff at Queens University
in Belfast, Northern Ireland. This was the first connection with
a member of the family from the area from where my ancestors
immigrated early in the last century. Marina responded to my
request for information and suddenly I realized the possibilities
of using this technology for further research.
It is my wish that family members or anyone else who has
information to share about the Monteith's send their information
to me. At present, I am not entirely certain how I will be able
to co-ordinate all of this, but I will probably start by grouping
the information by geographic location, hoping that common links
will eventually be discovered.
I would also like to set up an E-Mail directory. I will be
getting as much of the initial information as possible from the
on-line search engines but if for some reason your name is not
included, and you would like to have it published, please let me
know. Also, if your name has changed through marriage but you
would like to be included in the directory, please notify me
(indicating some information about your connection to the
Monteith family) and I will be happy to include you in the
directory.
